Watching Seth Meyers sing a musical ode to Afghanistan on Saturday Night Live, you'd never guess his childhood pets were a succession of massive sheepdogs named Albert. When Josh Meyers becomes a blond, sullen Eminem on Mad TV, there's no way of knowing his mom is a Bon Jovi-loving French teacher, or that he once shocked the mayor of Manchester by encouraging a gymnasium full of high school students to chant "We have gas! We have gas! We have gas!"
Was it Albert's lethargy or the mayor's distress that produced comic brothers Seth and Josh Meyers? Was it that southern New Hampshire water supply, the same that nourished Adam Sandler? Was it, as their father says, a genetic disposition for wackiness? Whatever it was - nature or nurture, or a fraction of both - the probability that both would end up on late-night television comedy shows is a statistical miracle.
Until recently, the lives of the Meyers brothers ran an eerily parallel course. Both graduated from Manchester's West High School and Northwestern University. Both traveled to Amsterdam to work at the same improvisational theater troupe, and both produced and performed two-person comedy shows. Then, two years ago, after his stage show and comedy-writing skills gained popularity, 29-year-old Seth Meyers landed a spot as a featured player on that time-tested, career-launching spectacle, Saturday Night Live, where he played a drug-addicted fashion photographer, a star of spoof commercials and aconvincing stand-in for stammering British pretty boy Hugh Grant. This year, younger brother Josh Meyers got his own break: a place on Mad TV, the edgy skit show that has become Saturday Night Live's competitor.
