Default Asian Disasters: Help

As some of y'all know, Asia was hit with the biggest disaster in history. First an earthquake and then tsunamis. Local people had drowned or been swept away including famous people (soccer players, actors, models, etc.). The death toll as of today is 76,718 and is expect to clim up towards 100,000.

As we’re laying here.

And I wake up today
Still smiling in the air.
Wish dreams could be so great.

now i'm pretty sure its over 150,000
i'm not exactly sure how many people from america or canada have died or if its even a really big issue over there
but its been front page news here in australia since it happened and 30 or so australians have died with more then 200 still missing

Currently australia is having a national fundraiser telethon thingy and raised around 5 million dollars in the space of 2hrs

It was also revealed australia has donated more per capita then any other country

(Giving props to what a great country i live in )

Seriously though...just curious to know how big a deal it is in other countries???

2 died from NZ, I think 4 are "missing" (presumed dead, bodies unable to be identified/found). NZ donated I think 10 million dollars, which isn't alot, but we're a much smaller country than alot of others. I think that money is just what they are giving upfront... alot of countries are "promising" money, rather than just giving in aid what they can. It's sad that it's become some sort of competition.

I don't think we've had any telethons or anything, we've only had like one telethon in the last 15 years, we have had alot of smaller scale stuff going on to raise money though.

I wonder how much of that will actually end up as aid for the people of these countries.

yeah thats true...
but supposedly the money thats being donated through places like world vision and through the telethon goes straight to the people...and not to the government to give out

Do u know if any NZ cricketers are playing in the tsunami charity match which is Asia Vs the rest of the world???
