[MADtv] Orlando Jones Has "Evidence" On ABC

According to reuters.com...

Oscar winner Martin Landau and Orlando Jones will star in the ABC drama pilot "Evidence," playing detectives who investigate murders by putting the evidence together and then constructing the crime.

The show is described as something of a "reverse CSI", in which the hard evidence is presented at the outset of the episode as a means of deconstructing the crime.

Orlando is no longer going to be a bounty-hunter on ABC's "The Catch", but will instead do this show. I like how that worked out.

After some production delays, it appears another legendary 74-year-old is finally ready to start shooting his new series in town.

Veteran actor Martin Landau will star in the ABC mid-season crime drama The Evidence, here opposite Orlando Jones.

The unique show will reveal all the clues to each case at the top of each episode and then invite viewers to play along with the shows characters as they try to solve the whodunit...

The pairing isn't the old guy and Orlando. It's Rob Estes, the guy who played the emo teacher on Boston Legal, and Orlando. Martin Landau (old guy) works in the lab and is basically their mentor.

I just saw the premiere episode (I have my sources) and I didn't find it that interesting. Despite being pimped as being completely unconventional as far as crime dramas go, its pretty run of the mill. It starts out with Martin Landau listing all the pieces of evidence uncovered from the crime scene, and then there is a "flashback" of sorts where they show you the last few minutes of the victims life, and the circumstances in which they died. The purpose of the show, or the reason to keep watching, is basically to show you how each piece of evidence fits into the story, and to uncover the murderer.

Orlando is OTT as always, and he plays the "funny" but angry cop. He's not bad though. He's basically second fiddle to Rob Este's character, who has a big, mysterious secret case that he's working on/ devoting his life to. There is a "twist" in the first episode ... stop reading if you don't want it spoiled for you:

At the beginning of the episode, one of the pieces of evidence is a severed finger with a compass ring on it. While chasing the murderer, Orlando gets stabbed in the stomach repeatedly and somehow gets his finger cut off. In typical crime drama fashion, he tells his partner to go after the perp. He doesn't die though.

I'm not into crime drama really but if I see it on sometime I'd check it out.

Entertainment Weekly review the pilot episode of "The Evidence" and the TV critic who reviewed it gave a "C".

It's not that great but these are the same people who gave Nicole Sullivan and Christiana Moore's failed sitcom "Hot Properties" a "D" last fall.
