Comedy Central: Presents with Pablo Francisco was hilarious. He's really funny. I wish he had stayed on MAD tV a little longer too.

Francisco's career has improved in stages

By Nick A. Zaino III, Globe Correspondent | July 23, 2004

The last time Pablo Francisco played Boston, he stood on a stage slightly larger than a postage stamp, rigged in front of a makeshift curtain that shook when he moved. That was five years ago at a suburban club that was renovating its main hall, banishing Francisco's show to a back dining room. During a particularly physical bit, the curtain nearly came down on him.

"Thank God we survived that," he says, laughing.

Tonight and tomorrow will be a different story. Francisco will be playing the Comedy Connection, Boston's "A" room. Progress for Francisco has come year by year; he's had a short stint as a cast member on "Mad TV" in 1998, appearances on Comedy Central and the preliminaries of this season's "Last Comic Standing," and a job hosting the current season of SiTV's "Latino Laugh Festival: The Show." None of these gigs have made Francisco a household name, but they have made his face more familiar.

The long climb might be tedious to some, but Francisco says he enjoys the life of a working comic. "Every minute of it was fun," he says. "If I had to go back and do it again, I would do it again."

Francisco, whose parents come from Chile, jabs lightly at his culture. He mocks the monotony of some Latino radio, mimics overly dramatic Telemundo soap operas, and even pokes fun at some other Latino comics who, according to Francisco, take their ethnicity too seriously.

"I think the Latino community puts it in my face," he says. " `Hey, we've got to stick together, da da da da.' I'm kind of realizing I'm not from that world, the world that they claim to be in."

When Francisco moved to Los Angeles from his native Tucson, he says he found more racism than he had ever encountered in his comfortable middle-class life back home. He decided when he arrived that he would avoid racists and activists alike and concentrate on stand-up.

"They're too busy knocking each other down," he says. "I'll just go to the comedy club."

His ambition is to have a show that fits his knack for the light
hearted. "To do a show similar to Dave Chappelle or Benny Hill," he says of his goal. "Something goofy, and just stupid and fun, with an intelligent twist."

Apolitical season The Comedy Studio is featuring a moratorium on political comedy for the week of the convention. "We've always done so many political shows that when I saw everyone else doing political shows, it was time to do the opposite," owner Rick Jenkins says. Rather than booking all nonpolitical comics, Jenkins has told everyone he had booked for next week to avoid political material, which will be hard for those who base their act on it. "It's really more of a challenge than a theme," Jenkins says.

It's been decided that Pablo is to be removed as a castmember since he is never even listed as such in any credits. Please edit your guides accordingly, including adding him to the notable appearances thread and any others if necessary.

Default coming soon:

Pablo Francisco - Bits and Pieces: Live From Orange County DVD

55 minutes

Synopsis:
This DVD features the standup comedy routine of Pablo Francisco. He is apparently a hot new comedian who has been seen on Mad TV, The Tonight Show, and more. His trademarks are voices, Latino jokes, and other things.

On this comedy show he covers such topics as NASCAR gear, soft porn, love songs, Aaron Neville, Psycho Chicks, Vegas, and other topics.

This DVD isn't rated, but the material is definitely R-rated. It features sexual themes, language, and other mature subject matter.

I've been meaning to ask the mods this for the longest time--since Craig, Tim, and Pablo's threads were taken out of the cast members section, is it still relevant to submit any news involving the three to the news address? (I don't have any; I'd just like to know for future reference)

Can't we have a vote on whether or not they should be in the cast discussion or not?

It was a staff decision because they've always been listed as "guest starring" and "special appearance".
