Default Green Day, Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott lead MTV's VMA Nominations

Taken from MTV.com:
There's really no substitute for experience. Such is the lesson to be gleaned from the crop of nominees for the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, where familiar faces like Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott and seasoned punks Green Day lead the pack.

For the first time, the live broadcast of the VMAs will be scored with original music, composed by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and the king of crunk himself, Lil Jon. Viewers will then have the opportunity to download the music as ringtones exclusively on *MTV on their Virgin Mobile phones.

There you go! I'm happy for Green Day and Gwen, I think they both put out really creative, different albums and videos this year. Same with Missy. So often it's people like Usher, Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Eminem that get a majority of the nominations for these things. They all took a back seat this year. I'm excited about the VMA's, sounds like it will be a fun show. I'm not so sure how I feel about P. Diddy hosting, I really don't care for him. I also think that the live music thing is a little weird, but every year the show proves to be interesting. Can't wait.

Why is Ciara and Ludacris' Video in the R&B section? We all know that song is not R&B. It's Hip-hop. But oh well. I'm glad Ludacris, Missy and Ciara all got nominated. I love their work.

I'm glad about Coldplay, Green Day, and The Killers being nominated. I loved their recent albums. P. Diddy hosting sucks though...why couldn't they get a comedian or something? eh well. At least Green Day's performing.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of P. Diddy.

As for the nominations, I'm pretty happy with them. It's hard for me to pick since I like most of them. And I'm glad Green Day is performing, as well.

Who watched the VMAs last night? They sorta sucked, if you ask me. The performances were all kinda blah, Green Day won pretty much everything so it was fairly predictable and nothing was that shocking or interesting.

Green Day won 7 out of 8 awards that they were nominated for, including Best Rock Video, Video of the Year and Viewer's Choice, only losing to Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For" for Art Direction. Kelly Clarkson won a lot, beating out Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" for both Best Female Video and Best Pop Video. Kanye West, Missy Elliott, The Killers, The Gorillaz, Alicia Keys and Ludacris also took home major awards. You can view the winners here.

What did you guys who watched it think?

Kelly's performance was f*cking awesome! I loved it. That was the best part of the whole show.

The rest of the show sucked. It was too urban for me, which I didn't like.

God it was F$%king awful.

This show in the past has always tried to push the envelope and hopefully get people to talk about it the next day.

This year.....nothing!!!

One huge reason why I didn't watch at all. The mogel who masterminded the death of 2pac and Biggie to sell records and act like a cross between Al Jolson and a retarded guy.

If you don't know who I'm talking about, I'm talking about the loser now known as "Diddy".

Believe me, if he lived in my neighbor, I would clearly beat the living sh#t out of him immediately.

Unless you live next door to Sasquatch that would be pretty freaking hard.

Yeah like newt said it was way too urban.

Without Brintey Spears the VMA's are dull.

So what is it? It was awful and nothing happened, or you didn't watch it so you have no idea what you're talking about?

I didn't watch it, but I saw the highlights on the news. What was with all the water? Was Kelly supposed to have to duck under that piddly little jet? Her performance looked awesome, there's a reason why she's the only "successful" Idol so far.

Diddy made the whole thing about him, wow how surprising. Green Day winning was awesome, predictable, but awesome. I wish they played American Idiot or Holiday, but whatever at least they performed. I also liked Coldplay, they're so awesome.

Well Dartanian, It was definitely "It was awful" and part of 'I didn't watch it". I only saw the tail end of it and I personally I think Kelly Clarkson should "can" the rock star image and be more "poppy" because she can't belt rock songs at all and also I which she was electracuted doing her bland music number.

I thought Kelly Clarkson's performance was terrible. She couldn't even stay on key. She barely hit ANY of the notes, she was just screaming and screeching the whole time. She's gonna damage her voice if she keeps doing that. She was having fun with it, which was cool, but she's a really good singer and every performance of hers I've seen recently she just screams and it's awful. It sounded nothing like the record. It was like she was trying WAY too hard to make it rock sounding and it didn't work out at all. She has a great voice, it's too bad.

It was cute when Kelly Clarkson won, though. She was really surprised.

Cartman - How can you criticize something that you didn't even watch? That seems kinda silly.

lol, you are SO right! You can always count on Britney to stir up some controversy and make the show wild and entertaining.

I watched the whole thing with everyone in #planetmadtv. I really was only watching because Kelly Clarkson was going to be on. I generally don't have MTV on my tv because nothing they do (including the VMA's) represents the type of music I like. Anywho, if I may critique, I got kind of pissed off at how this VMA was overly hip-hopped, so to speak. I think that since it is a music awards show, the event should have a musical theme, but perhaps a more diverse one. I've been notcing taking a whole "everybody loves hip-hop, lets just go with that" attitude with their programming in the past few years.

Anywho, I lost my train of thought there. I think that none of the performances were particularly dazzling but I did enjoy Kelly Clarkson's performance. I did notice her voice was a little strained in her performance. I think I read something about this in an interview with Tarja from Nightwish that if you don't have a means of adequately hearing your own voice (some sort of headphone/headset deal I assume) in large venues, you tend to strain/damage your voice, and it seemed like that was going on.

My other theory is that since she was the grand finale and it was a big event, she needed to change the style of the song she was singing. Since You've Been Gone is sort of the wrong song for this type of mood because it goes really quiet and subdued to a little rock-ish and louder, but because of the "grand finale" spot she was put in, I sort of feel like she had to kind of bring the whole song to a sort of fevered pitch, which I guess doesn't work that well sometimes.

Eh but what do I know. MTV events aren't for me, because they no longer even attempt to represent a wide variety of music genres. Bah @ that
