Default MADtv vs. Saturday Night Live

I've talked about it in five different threads, so what the hell, I might as well post it.

This was from the April issue of MAD color classics. It basically scored the two shows to see which one was better, so here it is...

It's been almost ten years now since upstart MAD-TV dared to challenge long-time powerhouse Saturday Night Live in the late night sketch comedy arena. Both have had their ups and downs and the competition has been the subject of much speculation in the press. But how are the shows really stacking up? Isn't it time that someone took a cold, totally objective and unbiased look at the situation? And who better than us, the magazine that was the inspiration for MAD-TV (AND Saturday Night Live, now that we come to think of it)! Letting the chips fall where they may, here's our tallying of...

MADtv vs Saturday Night Live
(The Score so Far)

SNL:
90 minutes long.....+50 points
MAD TV:
60 minutes long.....+400 points

SNL:
Absolutely no resemblance
to MAD Magazine whatsoever.....+5000 points
MAD TV:
Absolutley no resemblance
to MAD Magazine whatsoever.....+5000 points

SNL:
Always the treat of their
annoying catch phrases taking
over the public consciousness.....-50 points
MAD TV:
No threat of that......................... +50 points

SNL:
Makes you think anybody,
no matter how untalented,
can get a job as a cast
member of a national
sketch TV comedy show.....-500 points
MAD TV:
Proves it.............................-5000 points

SNL:
Many times, the cast
outnumbers the viewers.....-500 points
MAD TV:
Many times, the cast
outnumbers the jokes.........-5000 points

MAD TV:
Makes fun of bad many movies........+50 points
SNL:
Is the cause of many bad movies.....-50 points

MAD TV:
Most shameful moment:
Allowing Pauly Shore to host.....-1000 points
SNL:
Most shameful moment:
Seasons six through twenty......-10000 points

SNL:
Fake commercials often
funniest part of the show.....+1000 points
MAD TV:
Real commercials often
funniest part of the show......-1000 points

MAD TV:
Always being watched over by
the looming, inane face of
Alfred E. Neuman....................-1000 points
SNL:
Always being watched over by
the looming, inane face of
Lorne Micheals........................-2000 points

TOTAL:
SNL: -7,500
MAD TV: -7,500

To be continued this (and unfortunately every) Saturday Night!

To me, it seems SNL would have won if it weren't for the "Most Shameful moment" part. But I didn't start this thread to talk about what I think. I want to know what YOU think. Do you agree with it? Do you disagree? But, please, keep your posts mature, nothing like, "WHAT??!!! MAD MAGAZINE SUCKS!!! LETS BOYCOTT IT!!!"

I'm sure they did that to keep people happy. Kind of like Freddy vs. Jason. lol I personally liked the Pauly Shore part, I hated it when he was on. He grates my nerves.

When I read through this I saw the humor value in it how they were comparing the two and awarding and deducting points arbitrarily (sp?) in any amount and didn't use the same reasoning for awarding the points.

I didn't really look at it as to "really" be how

I liked Pauly Shore when he was on as well. He was great in that Cabana Chat sketch with Dixie & Pool Boy.

I was searching old threads and I saw someone posted some reviews from the show's debut. And they attacked them for this too. I wouldn't fault them on this as much as others have. Although I miss all the references (like Spy vs. Spy and Don Martin), it can't be exactly like the magazine. It's a sketch comedy show, for crying out loud, not a telezine. It can't do all the articles that the magazine does.

Uhh..Erin meant that she liked the Pauly Shore part in the MAGAZINE thing, because she DIDN'T like him when he was on MADtv. Notice how she said he grates her nerves.

lol! Yeah that's what I meant. Sorry for the confusion. It's easy to skip over a word or two when you're reading posts, I've done it myself.

Yeah, that is true. They could also keep the Spy vs. Spy (I'd rather see those than encores). Don Martin, however, they don't need to bring that back unless it's to pay tribute to him.

At least to keep MAD magazine happy, I'd make the opening credits for the next two seasons with a hand (maybe Neuman) flipping through MAD magazine, and seeing the different cast members on each page, with video clips on the page of their different sketches, etc.

Frankly I think that they should've Added points for the 90 minute thing because More Improv is Better even if it does mean that some sketches make a few people laugh........But I love Improv and Just watching it Kicks @$$!! But that's my opinion....I guess they don't agree.
