![]() ![]() ![]() Full Name: Mary Louise Scheer [news] Date of Birth: March 19th, 1967 Place of Birth: Detroit, MI Height / Weight: <unknown> / <unknown> Seasons on MADtv: 1-3 (1995 - 1998) Recurring Characters:
Like many sketch comedians before her, Mary Scheer began her comedy career with the legendary comedy troupe the Groundlings. For her first three screen appearances, however, she has independent-film director Todd Hughes to thank. The titles of the film shorts in which Mary appears give one a very vivid indication of Hughes' bizarre yet creative mind: Kaka Ferskur (Fresh Rolls) or The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, L.A. on $5 a Day, and The Chick's a Dick. Still, one can also appreciate what Mary might have seen in Hughes' unique mix of camp, black comedy, and homosexual overtones. After all, Mary eventually became one of the three original female cast members on "MADtv," a sketch comedy series that has long prided itself on cutting-edge parodies and outlandish concepts. Also noteworthy among Mary's work prior to "MADtv" is her small role in It's Pat, the unsuccessful attempt to create a feature film around Julie Sweeney's androgynous "Saturday Night Live" character. While Mary's small role as a nurse is nothing special, she did have the pleasure to work with one of the five original "MADtv" men, Phil LaMarr. Clearly, better things were in store for both performers. In 1995, word circulated around Los Angeles, CA, that auditions were being held for a new hour-long sketch comedy show, one that the FOX network planned to pit against NBC's "Saturday Night Live" in that iconic show's very time slot. Needing to escalate her career beyond meager film and television roles, Mary jumped at the opportunity to try out. She became one of three female performers to pass the "MADtv" auditions, along with younger up-and-comers Nicole Sullivan and Debra Wilson. Because Mary had a few years on Nicole and Debra, the fact that she was often typecast in matronly or elderly roles should come as no surprise. After all, if "MADtv" is given an inch, then it will certainly take that extra mile every time. To her credit, though, Mary took total advantage of the situation. Characters such as Connie Linder, Mrs. Vigor (a.k.a. Killer Grandma), and Debbie Dander fulfilled the motherly/old lady requirements quite effectively. Other eccentric recurring characters, however, show that Mary had much more to offer outside the box that had been built for her. Chain-smoking Mrs. Jewel Barone, white-trash Lily Don, and the irrepressible plastic-surgery nightmare known as Dixie Wetsworth gave Mary ample opportunity to showcase different aspects of her talent. All in all, Mary's "MADtv" years were endlessly productive and memorable. Sadly, though, the fun would come to an untimely end for Mary Scheer fans. During her third season on "MADtv," Mary limited her apperances considerably. Still, the reason for her abbreviated airtime was a valid and joyous one: she was concentrating on her new duties as a mother. Ironically, one of the very "MADtv" roles that had come to define Mary as a performer had now become the real-life role that led to her departure from the sketch comedy series after Season 3. Although Mary has yet to duplicate the level of success she achieved on "MADtv," the failure can hardly be attributed to a lack of effort on her part. She has made numerous guest appearances on television series, among them "Seinfeld," "Reno 911!," and "Primetime Glick." Mary even found time to revisit Todd Hughes, starring in his first feature film, the "feminist sci-fi fable" The New Women. Nevertheless, perhaps Mary's most notable post-"MADtv" venture is "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" (a.k.a. "MXC"), an unusual Spike TV series that combines footage from an '80s Japanese game show and commentary reminiscent of the Sci-Fi network's "Mystery Science Theater 3000." In a characteristically bizarre twist, Mary lends voices to all of the show's female characters. Then again, given the "MADtv" alum's versatile resume, any fan can see why "MXC" is such a natural fit for her. Whatever Mary Scheer does with her performing career from this point onward is subject to guesswork; still, she has always prided herself on leaving her fans guessing. Where are they now? As of January 2008, Mary continues to star on "MXC," although no new episodes have surfaced since February 2007. When Mary is not busy with raising her children, she also continues to make guest apperances in films and on various television shows, the most recent of which occurs on the Disney Channel's "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody." Has anyone seen the movie "Elvira's Haunted Hills"? I noticed it at an import store in the city the other day and it was the first time I had seen it here. It wasn't that cheap, so I don't want to spend money on it if it totally sucks balls (it looks pretty stupid, but I'm a fan of Mary's so if at least she is good in it, I might get it). So, anyone got any "reviews"?

While watching American Idol, there was a commerical/preview for a new show on Fox called Free Ride, and Mary was in the preview.
Accroding to IMDB, she plays Louise in an episode called Up Your Auntie. There's a preview episode March 1st at 9:30/8:30c The show itself premieres March 12 9:30/8:30c. I don't know if "Up Your Auntie" will be shown on either day, but look out for that. Should this be submitted to Front Page News? |
