I owed Paul Vogt fifteen bucks one time and I couldnt pay up. His brother, Peter, was coming around the corner, so I hid, jumped and and took his wallet. It had EXACTLY fifteen dollars, which I gave to Paul to settle our debt.
I was arrested, though, and went before a magistrate, who sentenced me to thirty days with a stern warning... NEVER ROB FROM PETER TO PAY PAUL!!!!!!!!!! |

THEATER
'New Brain' has 'so much heart' Actors are attracted to William Finn's realistic musicals that convey other worlds. By Elizabeth Maupin | Sentinel Theater Critic Posted July 30, 2004 Musical theater used to be about beautiful mornings and enchanted evenings and how to solve a problem like Maria. No more. Listen to song titles from William Finn's shows: "Marvin at the Psychiatrist." "Gordo's Law of Genetics." "Four Jews in a Room Bitching." "Poor, Unsuccessful and Fat." Finn, actors say, writes songs the way real people talk. That's why they clamor to be in his shows -- the likes of Falsettos, Romance in Hard Times and Elegies, musicals that the typical person doesn't know. That's why Orlando Theatre Project is presenting one of Finn's little-known musicals, A New Brain, in its "Musicals in Concert" series tonight through Sunday as a fund-raiser for the 18-year-old professional troupe. "Ever since I first heard William Finn's March of the Falsettos, I've wanted to do one of his shows," says T. Robert Pigott, the OTP company member who is playing the lead in this 1998 off-Broadway musical. Finn may not be known beyond the world of the musical-theater aficionado, but he first turned up off-Broadway 25 years ago with In Trousers, the first of a trilogy of shows about a man named Marvin who leaves his wife for another man. The second and third parts of that trilogy, which Finn wrote with James Lapine -- March of the Falsettos (1981) and Falsettoland (1990) -- were produced together on Broadway in 1992 under the name Falsettos, which won Tony Awards for Lapine, for best book of a musical, and for Finn, for best original score. Others may compare Finn to the Beatles, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro or Joni Mitchell, but director Anne Hering compares him to Stephen Sondheim, the most highly respected musical-theater composer working today. "He has Sondheim's wit, and his music is challenging to the voice and to the ear," Hering says. "His rhythms are interesting. It's not typical Rodgers and Hammerstein." In A New Brain, Pigott plays Gordon Schwinn, a composer who aspires to write shows for Broadway but makes his living writing for a children's TV show starring a frog named Mr. Bungee. Gordon has writer's block, and he also has been diagnosed with a brain tumor -- not such a usual topic for even an off-Broadway musical but not so strange for Finn, who actually went through a similar experience and lived to tell the tale. Besides Pigott, the cast features actors from Disney and the University of Central Florida, plus one guest star: Paul Vogt, the former Orlando actor who is now a regular on Mad TV. Vogt, who appeared in Below the Belt and Sylvia for OTP, plays the despicable frog character Mr. Bungee. Vogt may be appearing in the benefit because of his affection for OTP and its dedication to "new and refreshing work," but he also appreciates the way Finn draws his audience into his story. "He catches you up in a tune that gets the audience to relax and just enjoy the show," Vogt says. "By doing that, he catches you up in the emotion of the story, and before you know it, you're crying your eyes out, then laughing, then crying, then laughing, then sobbing. . . . "His words and music grab you and really take you to his world, his story. They deposit you there, and it becomes your story too." Finn wrote A New Brain with Lapine, his collaborator on Falsettos, and their work on the show hits home for this crowd of actors. "What do you do when you hit the artistic block and can't break through?" Hering asks. "As a bunch of artists, it resonates with us." As for Pigott, the emotion of the story pulls him in. "A New Brain has so much heart in it," he says. "The message I love about Gordo's journey is the reminder to enjoy life to its fullest every minute. There are no guarantees we have, as far as time is concerned, so don't allow yourself to focus on the negative." Pigott, Vogt and the rest of the cast are contributing their time to the project to help raise some money for Orlando Theatre Project, a fund-raiser that Hering calls "crucial." The company is renting space at Orlando Repertory Theatre (the old Civic Theatre of Central Florida) for three shows during the 2004-05 season, in addition to the three shows it will do at Seminole Community College, and it needs money to pay the additional rent. Tonight's opening-night auction of theater and film memorabilia, including posters signed by Barbra Streisand and Madonna, is expected to help the cause. "With funding at an all-time low for art, I want to do anything in my power as an actor to help promote theater," Pigott says. A New Brain will be followed almost immediately at the Rep by OTP's Stones in His Pockets, an Irish comedy opening Thursday and running through Aug. 22. It features John Connon and Chris Pfingsten and is directed by Eric Hissom. Like A New Brain, the show will be unfamiliar to most Orlando theatergoers. But that, Pigott says, should make people all the more interested in coming. "It's a new work for Orlando," he says of A New Brain. "Central Florida audiences need to surprise themselves and see three or four or a dozen shows a year that they've never heard of or that sound like they might be different." The familiar can be mighty entertaining, he concedes, but "the risk of seeing something you don't know about can provide such surprising exhilaration." I saw the episode of Reno 911! where Paul played the Paintball Sniper last night. That was one of the funniest parts of the episode, just because of the way his character reacted to the officers.
