When he did that monolouge for the 200th episode he said he was in AA and that his sponsor said to only drink on special occasions (wtf?) but at artielangedeatchwatch.com it has stories all over there about him always getting drunk.

Howard Stern's Sidekick Mouths Off

Wise guy Artie Lange is on The Howard Stern Show every day, joking about hard drinking and heavy eating, because in Artie's world, nothing is ever done "light." The 37-year-old sidekick began his career as a Mad TV cast member and soon moved to movies (Dirty Work) and back to TV (ABC's Norm). But it's been with radio icon Howard Stern that Lange has hit his groove, providing his own "average guy" sensibility to the conversational mix. Lange's new DVD It's the Whiskey Talking (out today) documents his expletive-filled live act and proves that, even when the comic is flying solo, he's always got something intriguing to say.

TV Guide Online: How much Jack Daniel's was consumed during the making of your DVD?
Artie Lange: I'd say about four carafes. Honestly, you've really only had a wild night of drinking when you pass out and wake up naked in a police car with two cops, but here's the weird thing, you're driving.

TVGO: You enjoy drinking and eating. What's your favorite road food?
Lange: Hmm... hot dogs. In Jersey, we do an Italian hot dog, which people think is a sausage, but it's not. It's a hot dog in a cut-out roll with peppers, onions, potatoes, and mustard. Go have one at Ting-a-ling's in Newark.

TVGO: Will do! You get a lot of ribbing about your less-than-healthy lifestyle. There's even a website, ArtieLangeDeathWatch.com, devoted to predicting your demise. Does it ever bother you?
Lange: Well, it doesn't help me in getting life insurance. Hey, I've learned to embrace my image. I'm not going to pretend that, on the weekends, I'm at spin class and drinking Jamba Juice.

TVGO: You also get kidded about your bombed flick with Norm MacDonald, appropriately titled Dirty Work.
Lange: Whenever I meet someone who saw it, I feel I should give them their 10 bucks back. It's my idea of a public service.

TVGO: Dirty Work isn't that bad. What's really the worst film you've ever done?
Lange: That's like asking Babe Ruth for his favorite home run. I did this movie with Chris O'Donnell and Renee Zellweger called The Bachelor. It was such nothingness. It's like something you'd put on in a dentist office - the movie version of Muzak.

TVGO: You get wild guests on Stern. Any favorites?
Lange: Nothing better than James Brown. He's so funny because no matter what weird things you bring up about his life, like different arrests, he just looks at you and laughs real hard. He never admits or denies anything. Then you just go "Ahhh, you're James Brown. You're forgiven." Steve-O [from MTV's Jackass] is good. He came in and said, "I'm going to staple my scrotum to my leg." We said, "Why?" He said, "Look guys, I'm not here to waste your time." That's the best line ever! A lot of people do waste our time on the show. But Steve-O, he never disappoints.

TVGO: And the hottest chick ever on the show?
Lange: The hottest chick was Playboy Playmate Jennifer Walcott, without question. Go check her out on the Web now. Also, one time while on the air, we went to Pam Anderson's hotel room and she was in a bikini just running around with five strippers. It was one of the greatest mornings of my life.

TVGO: What's Howard Stern like off the air?
Lange: He's one of the greatest guys and a great boss. He's really honest; you always know where you stand with him. I'm happy to say we're friends and when we go out for dinner, we end up BS-ing about the same things we talk about on the air - broads [laughs].

TVGO: Will you be moving with him to satellite radio?
Lange: Definitely. And like any fan of comedy, I'm looking forward to hearing what The Howard Stern Show will sound like completely uncensored. For me, it should be the most fun ever.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Lange opposite of slick 'Ka'

Some weeks in this town just bring home all the changes.

The week before last, Cirque du Soleil launched its new "Ka." The party alone reportedly cost more than $2 million. With live performance art and a Brazilian band on the floor of the MGM Grand Garden, no one had to worry about small talk.

The show and party raised the ceiling of possibility for the exploding corporate Vegas. "Ka" is so theatrical and sophisticated, you can forget people are doing dangerous things up there.

Three nights later, Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange headlined a comedy show at the Hard Rock Hotel. There was a sense of danger there, too: Would his pants fall down? Would he stumble off the stage into the front row?

For the uninitiated, Lange is his generation's Dean Martin: the comic drunk. His appeal seems divided between his often-inspired regular-guy comedy and the spectacle of watching him self-destruct onstage.

His Las Vegas legend grows with every visit. This was his third Super Bowl weekend, and this night reminded me of seeing Sam Kinison at his deranged peak in a Bally's ballroom on Memorial Day weekend of 1989.

Lange was functional at the outset, but the crowd seemed split between those who wanted the material and others who wanted to shout Stern catchphrases or watch Lange get pasted.

Lange was happy to oblige. "I'm chasing Jack Daniels with Jack Daniels," he noted after downing a shot, then cooling it off with a sip from an icy cup.

Later he demonstrated how to "chug through a straw," then hurled the plastic cup of ice at his video image on a rear screen. The apex may have been his a cappella rendition of Elvis Presley's "American Trilogy" in its entirety, as people fled the room.

The Stern crew later dissected Lange's psyche on the air. "Artie's not rock-bottom yet," Stern opined. "He's able to come to work and do his thing."

"It was work. I made a lot of money," Lange said in his defense. But he also claimed that when he is finished promoting his new DVD, "I'm done with stand-up for at least a year."

Maybe he can learn from Dino. By most accounts, the Rat Pack gigs that began honestly enough with the "Ocean's Eleven" filming in 1960 evolved into calculated affairs. And Martin's drunk shtick often substituted iced tea for bourbon. If you're looking for the perfect vintage-to-corporate Vegas metaphor, there you go.

Driving home, I had mixed emotions. Part of me was embarrassed at having witnessed the debacle. If Lange could pull off the ice tea scam, we might have him around longer.

But there was something about that night that will make it linger like that Kinison show so long ago.

Something so raw, so unhinged. So far from corporate. Especially after the "Ka" party.

Comic teeters in Stern's sidekick chair

Artie Lange, one of Howard Stern's comic on-air sidekicks, might be bolting the high-profile morning radio show for greener pastures in films and television, but Stern maintains he'll support "my man, whatever he does."

Lange, hired as the latest in a line of comedians as a foil and straight man for Stern's jokes and barbs, failed to show up for work this past Thursday and Friday after he appeared to suffer a crisis of confidence -- or something -- during the Wednesday broadcast on WXRK/92.3 FM.

Lange turned anxious and out-of-character serious on Wednesday following a bit on the show where a guest said he had spent time with Lange's sister and that she was "fun and sweet." Lange's voice turned low; he was obviously upset that his sister's private life was the subject of a discussion on the Stern show.

In the subsequent back-and-forth with the host -- which Stern replayed on his show Friday morning -- Lange told how he was conflicted about leaving the show for a TV sitcom or a movie career. "Professionally my life has been good for a decade," he said. "Personally I'm out of control."

Stern chided him about not following through on appointments with a psychiatrist, and scolded the comic's management and agent for not working out the situation so that Lange could do a movie and still stay with the show. Stern said Friday that Lange begged off the show that day because he'd been out late the night before shooting a new film, "Beer League."

Several times during the Wednesday chat Lange mentioned his "insane guilt" about leaving Stern and said he hadn't yet resolved an offer to join Stern when he jumps to Sirius satellite radio next year.

"You have to make a decision, what you want to do in life," Stern said "Your deal can be, you can leave tomorrow. Soon as you leave, you will be forgotten."

Lange, who has appeared on "The Norm Show" with Norm McDonald in 1999, also was cast in several movies, including "Lost & Found," with David Spade and "The Bachelor," with Renée Zellweger. Lange, 37, was born in New Jersey and worked as a longshoreman, performed stand-up comedy and was an original cast member on Fox's "Mad TV" in 1995. Lange talks frequently on the Stern show about his penchant for alcohol. Lange's publicist, Lewis Kay in Los Angeles, said Friday that Lange "intends to be at work on Monday morning. Probably more will be resolved then."

Artie Lange said Infinity floated a $5 -10 million multi-year figure by him to host his own show. Lange said he discussed the matter with his agent, who suggested using it as leverage to extract more money from Sirius. A permanent member of the Stern cast since October 2001, Lange said he told Infinity he wasn’t interested and decided against using the company’s interest as a bargaining chip with Sirius.

While women throw bras on stage during rock concerts, comedian Artie Lange receives baked goods and bottles of Jack Daniels from his female fans at his stand-up performances. He's not complaining.

“As I was walking onstage in Boston at this club, a woman handed me an enormous cake box,’’ says Lange, who replaced Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling three years ago on Howard Stern's syndicated morning radio show. “The crowd wouldn't shut up until I had a piece so I just cut a piece and ate it and then I washed it down with some Jack.”

The comedian and “Mad TV” alum is preparing to release his first stand-up DVD, “Artie Lange: It's the Whiskey Talking,” which he recorded at an April gig at the Tempe Improv.

“It's one of my favorite clubs in the country and the crowds are always great,” Lange says. “It's a beautiful club. It looks good on film. And (David) Spade and Dennis Miller both did specials there, so I figured I'd tape it there.’’

In addition to his set at the Improv, Lange says the DVD will also include a behind-the-scenes feature from a couple of New Jersey performances and a short film about a softball team which he wrote and appears in.
Though he loves performing stand- up, Lange — who has had small roles in the films “Old School” and “Elf” — says his gig with Stern is the best in the world.

“I'm not going to find a better job than this, that's for sure,’’ he says. “It's like being at a bar or diner and just talking with your buddies and laughing. That's all I do.’’

Last night, I was flipping through the channels last night and I saw Artie on the Best Damn Sport Show period or in my opinion the worst darn sports show period.

First of he was there promoting his indie film "Beer League" and was also has their talking about his role on the Howard Stern (Sirius) Satellite Radio Show".

But the more I watched, the more I realized that he's put on some weight since his guest appearence on MADtv last year.

Here's another update about Artie Lange, Once again he was on Best Damn last night.

But there was a couple differnces from his last appearence.

First, the show was doing a week's worth of shows from Las Vegas where the show was promoting the Hooters' Swimsuit Pagent.

Second, Artie says his appearence on Best Damn are usually taped to air on Howard Stern's Radio show and Howard and his cast of idoits for responses to his remarks.

and last he reportedly has a long standing feud with Andrew Dice Clay even though he recently opened up with him a couple weeks ago.

Any reaction to this?

Over the weekend I saw Artie on the Comedy Central special "The Roast Of William Shatner" in which he was very funny and it appears very drunk.

It also featured an appearence by George Takei who along with Artie is currently working on the Howard Stern radio show on Sirius Radio since January along fellow Star Trek castmate Nicole Nicholls, Greg Giraldo, Jeffrey Ross, Jason Alexander who was the MC of the event and a too out of control at times Andy Dick.

Comedy Central has aired the show a couple of times already but there is uncensored clips from the event and other moments that didn't air on the show at www.comedycentral.com
