I don't know why Jay has so much loyalty to NBC. He's doing them a solid, and there screwing him over.

What do you mean they won't admit it? That's EXACTLY what they've done!

Like I said earlier, by all means, he should've went to FOX if he didn't want to retire. They were willing to pay him good money, and he wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes like he is now or would have if he went to ABC. Plus, the whole draw of the new 10:00 show is the older crowd (which Leno attracts) can watch it and go to bed earlier. On FOX, it would air at 11:00, so they could be to bed by 11:30 instead of midnight. And he could keep everything the same since he wouldn't have any added pressure of being the lead in to the news.

Unfortunately, he has some stupid sense of loyalty to NBC, the very network that's trying to kill him (metaphorically speaking, of course).

By what I read (and since I am a tvman, you can take my word with some seriousness) this is sort of half right. By what I've heard, Jay basically fell on his sword for NBC, and Conan. He didn't want to feel like a burden to Conan, leaving him in late night while he was unsuccessful (this was back when Jay was floundering in the ratings next to Letterman). When Jay started to pull ahead on Letterman, and then started completely dominating him, NBC panicked. They didn't want him getting so popular, because if that happened, and he decided to move to another network, NBC didn't want him to infringe on Conan's new territory. I think that's a sign that NBC doesn't have as much confidence in Conan as we think. So now Jay's stuck in this spot, and he might be getting understandably pissed off.

I'm surprised NBC is treating Jay like this, because though they would never admit it, the truth is that Jay's show may very well be the thing that determines weather the network sinks or swims. In all of television history, there have always been one of the big 3 networks that struggled against the others at one time or another. Fox in the late 1990's, ABC in the early 2000's, NBC in the early 1980's, but out of all of them, I don't think there has been one network that has failed worse than NBC now. There ratings are dismal, they now have to face cable, and despite having some popular shows like The Office, and The Tonight Show, they cannot find a bonafied hit. I honestly think that NBC is so bad right now, they may soon (like in the next 5 years) have to become a cable station if they cannot recover. If TNT, or USA Network get too popular, they may try to get NBC's channel spot, which is something I think many advertisers would vouch for. Jay means a lot to NBC because they have made the controversial decision to give him that spot 5 days a week. Committing what many networks feel is a television crime. If his show fails, and he moves on to another network like Fox, and kills Conan in the ratings, it might be one of NBC's biggest failures in it's networks history. Something they definitely cannot afford to happen.

Well, you're about to be REALLY mad because NBC is doing its damnedest to make sure his new show fails so he doesn't defect to ABC or FOX (which, by all means, he should have gone to if he didn't want to retire).

Coco Christopher is back!

I was totally impressed the first time I saw that .gif. Even though it is a compilation of various Mario levels, and not one distinct one, I definitely can see the obvious similarities. It's amazing.

Yeah it's pretty damning, and pretty damn awesome!

I just saw the year 3000 thing on the internet. It was really good. My 2 favourites were, the movie about NBC's primetime line up being called "Land of the Last", and that Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook will murge to become "You Twit Face".

Unknown at this point, but the evidence is pretty damning. I was thinking the same thing on Monday night. Either way, I stand firmly behind my assessment.

Is that seriously what they designed his background after, or is it just a coincidence? If it's not a coincidence, then your right bw, that is awesome!

I also read something today that apparently Jay is angry with NBC because they are trying to get his new show to have more sketches and less focus on guests. Jay doesn't like this because that is not his strong suit. He is much better interviewing celebrity than he is at anything else. He was under the impression that the show was going to be similar to his Tonight Show. He also doesn't like it that NBC seems to be putting all of the networks preasure on Jay, like the success of Jay's show will determine weather the network sinks or swims.

I can see both sides of this argument. If Jay feels like the show is moving to a place that isn't his strong suit (though I did read an article where they said he didn't have a problem with fewer guests because he doesn't like interviews anyway), I can see why he'd have an issue with that. It's never a good idea to NOT play up to somebody's strengths. However, if the show keeps the exact same format as his Tonight Show, that puts all the other shows in a bad position. Who's gonna wanna watch another two-and-a-half hours to talk ON TOP OF this show?

I can also see the problem he's facing of being the "hook" to the 11:00 news. Often times, people stop watching the late night shows after the initial monologue and skits and don't watch the guests (which is why, as much as I enjoy Tavis Smiley's interviews, I don't watch his show unless someone I'm interested in is on). But now, he's got to keep the viewers in for the whole hour, whereas the other talk shows aren't worried as much about the second half of the show.

I think the whole reason he even agreed to do the 10:00 show was because he felt there wasn't as much pressure on it to have spectacular ratings. His Tonight Show averaged 5.1 million a night, and it seemed like NBC wasn't expecting the 10:00 show to do much better than that. But it seems like they're asking more of the show than it can actually give, so I don't see this working out in the long run. Jimmy Kimmel says pretty much the same thing

Shifting gears a bit, Conan has been really good his first week. "In the Year 3000" was hilarious.

Well, I have watched Conan's show since he returned on TV, I think he's funny.

Also, Conan is the only show I have watched in recent years thank to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog among other things.

Jay can be mad all he wants. He isn't funny and more sketches aren't going to fix that. Hope he crashes and burns.

Jay's only returing becuase it wasn't his decision to leave the Tonight Show, it was NBC's ploy to attract more viewers by bringing in a younger host. The Jay Leno came into existence becasue other networks wanted to have him so NBC tried to find a way to keep him. So, if you ask, me NBC is the one screwing these other guys over. And, no bw, I'm not 50, I jsut have a strong opinion on this. I'm just not a fan of Conan's style of humor, I don;t think it fits the Tonight Show format. However, I'll probably learn to accept it eventually. And tvman, Conan may have been good as a writer but not as a talkshow host. He only wrote like 4 episodes of The Simpsons. And with the writing process involved with TV shows like that, the scripts for those episdoes aren't 100% his writing. Anyway that's enoguh ranting for now.

I like Conan. I really do think he's hilarious, and his show last night was good. Also, he wrote some of the best work at the Simpsons, so how can you hate somone like that? I never liked Jay Leno, and I hate it that he's coming back. He's completely screwing Conan over, and screwing Jimmy Fallon over more. By the time Jimmy comes on, everybody will be tired of talk. Speaking of that, how does Carson Daly still have a show at like 1:30 in the morning on NBC? Who is still up, and can take more talk at that time?

Oh why did they get Conan O'Brien to host the tonight show. If his former show and first shot at hosting tonight are any indication of what his stint at this job will be like, its gonna suck in ways I cant imagine. I already miss Jay, don't think I can get through 3 months of Leno withdrawal. Although, I'll admit I've never been a big fan of late night talk shows- they're more of a time killer on nights when there's nothing better to do.

My friend showed me that article yesterday. Interesting. The bobbing for apples was hilarious. But I missed Conan on Martha. Hopefully there will be reruns.
