Post "Family Guy Live in Las Vegas"

Seth MacFarlane is having second thoughts about an Ashlee Simpson lip-sync joke.

"That's not something that's going to be relevant six months from now. It's not relevant now and it just aired," the creator of "Family Guy" says about one of the many rapid-fire gags on a recent episode of Fox's animated comedy.

"You don't want to be too topical because animation has a great shelf life. You don't want to be any more topical than 'All in the Family' was. There are definitely issues of the (time), but they weren't issues of the week."

But the music that scores MacFarlane's hit is always timeless. "The Flintstones" is 40 years old, he notes, but the "bouncy orchestra" scoring "doesn't feel dated like something from the '70s."

Likewise, "Family Guy" has a classic big-band sound that lends itself to a live concert on Saturday as part of The Comedy Festival.

"Family Guy Live in Las Vegas" brings to real life the comedy album of the same name released earlier this year. The show and album both stem from MacFarlane's collaborations with Walter Murphy, who once worked as an arranger for Doc Severinsen and the "Tonight Show" band.

Murphy's theme song "really suggested the musical style of the show," the 32-year-old MacFarlane says. "We both have a real affection for that type of music ... Hopefully we've established a musical style that will be as enjoyable 10 years from now as it is today."

The CD puts the TV characters in front of a swingin' house band for a mock-variety revue that falls somewhere between the Rat Pack and the cornball TV shows of the era that forced Sinatra and company to play by the cue cards.

"I was raised on that stuff myself. My parents exposed my sister and I to just about every show tune under the sun," MacFarlane says. "I developed an appreciation for the sound of an orchestra."

Saturday's concert expands upon live "Family Guy" events that began with a staged reading at the Montreal Comedy Festival last summer. They grew into live events in Los Angeles and New York to promote the show's resurrection last spring, after strong DVD sales prompted Fox to revive it.

But none of the live events so far have been "quite this flashy or elaborate," MacFarlane says. Murphy will conduct a 30-piece orchestra and eight backing singers. MacFarlane will handle the bulk of the lead vocals, singing in the voices of series dad Peter Griffin, booze-hound family dog Brian and Stewie, the scheming baby Bond villain in the making.

Alex Borstein provides the female voice as "Family" wife Lois. "Alex has done a fair amount of this kind of stuff. She's more seasoned by a large margin than I am," MacFarlane confesses.

He will look to a classic Las Vegas antidote to any form of stage fright. "It's Vegas and nothing a little slug of the right beverage won't cure."

I thought we had a front page news thread on GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, but I guess not. Alex was nominated along with the other cast for "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" "for the 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards(R) for outstanding performances in 2005".

Ooooh congrats to Alex! It's good to see a Mad member getting some recognition. I didn't know her part in Good Night, and Good Luck was substantial enough to get her in the cast nomination, that's really cool. Maybe her performance will get her more recognition and parts in more respected films. Maybe now I'll see Good Night, and Good Luck. I don't like George Clooney, and I definitely don't support the movies views. But anyways, Go Alex!!!

Alex is also nominated for a Grammy as part of the cast of Family Guy for the album Family Guy In Las Vegas in the Best Comedic Album Category.

But someone didn't post it yet even though I submitted it to the news forum when it was announced last month

If we made a news thread for every nomination for this and that, it'd just be too much. If you post about an award someone has won we MIGHT be more inclined to post that on the front page, depending.

Well the Grammy Awards were tonight and Alex Borstein was one of the nominees up for an award.

You might remember the cast of the hit TV series Family Guy recorded a musical comedy album called Family Guy Live In Las Vegas which was nominated for Best Comedy Album.

Well I'm sad to announce that Alex and the rest of Family Guy lost to Chris Rock and his album "Never Scared" for that honor.

It was not a surprise however, this is Mr. Rock's third win in the award.

Well better luck next time.

Anyone see "Little Man" yet? I didn't know that Alex was in it, I was pleasantly surprised. She was funny too, and it wasnt a tiny part, she was in the movie several times.

I was suprised as well. I went to see "Just My Luck" with some friends (It sucked by the way) and during the previews I saw her. Does anyone know if she is a main character? The movie looks really dumb but if she is funny in it then I may consider giving it a chance.

I think Lindsay Lohan is the star of "Just My Luck" but all the critics think its one of the worst film of 2006 so far.

Meanwhile let's talk about Alex in this thread.

DESPERATE ROLE MODELS:
This fun, hip and irreverent piece features interviews with iconic TV housewives, who share wit and wisdom with the women of Wisteria Lane. These housewives talk about their roles in TV history and tell viewers what they love about the "Desperate Housewives" women, who in turn share who they admire and relate to. The Desperate Role Models include: Shirley Jones ("The Partridge Family"), Jane Wyatt ("Father Knows Best"), Michael Learned ("The Waltons"), Debra Jo Rupp ("That 70's Show"), Daphne Reid ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), Patricia Richardson ("Home Improvement"), Marion Ross ("Happy Days"), Alex Borstein ("Family Guy"), and Joanna Kerns ("Growing Pains").
