Default The last album I listened to was...

Okay, we know the drill here. This is just like the "Last Movie I watched..." thread, except replace movie with album, and watched with listened. There, that wasn't so hard, people! Much like that thread, this is designed to be an all-purpose thread to discuss our opinions about the recent albums we've listened to, as well.

I just listened to Perdition City by Ulver...you know, that Norwegian band whom never, ever releases albums which are one in the same. Okay, for lack of a better term, PC is Ulver's "experimental electronic" record. A word for the wise - despite being an excellent album with a foreboding atmosphere, it is ANYTHING but catchy. If you go into this expecting something easy to pick up, you will pretty much be disappointed beyond belief. This is one of those albums that you have to be in the perfect mood for...I think someone once said that this is an album you should listen to at nighttime, while the lights are out, and without any distractions, in order to fully grasp the concept of this album. Of course, there are some songs that I think are 'catchier' (term used loosely) onto than others. A good example is the final track "Nowhere/Catastrophe", which is by far the most "typical" song on here. Garm/Trickster G/God Head/Fiery G. Maelstrom/Homie G. Dawg's vocals are absolutely mesmerizing (it's also the only track where the vocals appear in the majority of the song) and meld together wonderfully with the piano/synth lines. Other notable songs would be "Lost In Moments", featuring excellent usage of a saxophone, and "Dead City Centres", which WILL make you feel like you're standing alone in a cold, desolate city in the middle of night, surrounded by many mysterious beings.

Bottom line, it just plain rules, but it's not a "easy" album by any means. So, give it a few listens before discrediting it completely...because although it may not grow on you in the short term, it will eventually.

Mmm girl. I lyke NEVER buy CD's (and this time was no exception), but I just got Kanye West's new CD. It's an ok album. It'll probably grow on me the more I listen to it. But I do like that "Drunk and Hot Girls" song.

My favorite songs are good morning, stronger, homecoming, and flashing lights......uh actually I like all the songs but those are just my favorites. hehEz

The Crown's Deathrace King and Crowned in Terror. The Crown is just unrelentingly fast but not the kind of fast that rubs me the wrong way. They're Swedish so they still have it in them to add some melody without bogging down the music in any way. It's definitely quite a feat to try to listen to either of these albums in the car without going way over the speed limit. Also, apparently both albums were recorded with Tomas Lindberg on vocals but Crowned in Terror was re recorded with a new vocalist and then re released as Crowned Unholy, which is a pretty stupid idea if you ask me.

The Crown kind of reminds me of Cryptopsy in that they have a really phenomenal drummer, but the rest of the band isn't too shabby either. They have a more consolidated sound though, whereas Cryptopsy can be downright dissonant at times. As cool as Lord Worm is, I'd take Lindberg on vocals any day. It's just my luck though that as soon as I find out about the band I also find out that they have broken up

well this Khia mixtape was the last one I listened to. It was a controversial mixtape recorded by the hit artist. But before that I listened to blackout by Brit on youtube. her entire album leaked on the site except for one song. And it's all pop songs! There's no slow jams or sappy songs like on regular albums. And her album cover sucks ass big time.

Tad Morose's Undead.

All I can say is, with the legions of "gay" (I don't like using this term, but with what I'm describing, it fits perfectly) Italian/Finnish power metal bands, this Swedish band is a breath of fresh air. It's about time that there's a band that has power metal's best traits (most notably an epic feel), but also neither has it's worst traits - keyboards as the main instrument and wimpy vocals (Sonata Arctica, I'm lookin' at you...). Basically, as a comparo, mid-era Blind Guardian comes to mind. In other words, you get thrashy guitars and vocals that still have that soaring power metal sound, but actually have some "balls" to them (sort of like Hansi Kursch). The production is decent, but obviously doesn't have the sterling quality of a Blind Guardian. Now for the album itself - all I can say is that this is the best Blind Guardian album that BG never wrote. Keep in mind this is only after a single listen, as well...who knows how highly I'll rate if after more listens.

If you still think this band sounds "gay", then you can go back to masturbating over your collection of Blazebirth Hall bands, Nemesis

I haven't bought an album since May, and that was MC Chris is Dead. I am way behind in my music listening.

I got In Flames' new album A Sense of Purpose. I realize they're nothing like what they used to be and that those days are long gone, but I've been cautiously optimistic that they're starting to spring back to something at least half decent from the stuff people always bitch about (Reroute to Remain, Soundtrack to Your Escape). Come Clarity was more or less a step in the right direction, ignoring the annoying female vocals on one of the tracks, but I think this one might have been a step backwards. I should listen a few more times though to be fair.

Casting Crown's The Altar And The Door. (CHRISTIAN MUSIC ALERT) Quite middle-of-the-road. I've always seen them as great writing, shoddy music. What This World Needs has an excellent hook with a decent song, and the next four songs follow this formula.

Then we get into the second half with the title song, and it turns out that it blows. The writing is good, but the song is nothing short of terrible. Somewhere In The Middle drags on...and on...for five minutes. The next two songs are forgettable, and for some reason the 5-minute All Because of Jesus pops up as 11 on my iPod. The song's pretty bland, but about 7:19 in, they have a bonus track which is pretty cool.

All in all, though, first half is good, second half blows. Get it on torrents or something.

Third Day's Revelation, on the other hand, was consistently 4-star throughout. The first five songs would easily nail 5 stars, but the rest is pretty good too. Get it.

Default Buuuuuuump.

Mastodon's Crack the Skye.

To put a long story short, this album is a bit of a turning point for Mastodon. While Blood Mountain showed some hints of the new direction, Crack the Skye is a departure from their sludge metal roots. This album is as much '60s/'70s style prog as it is sludge. Be warned that this is their least heavy album...but that's a moot point when you consider that songwriting of this album surpasses their older works. My only complaint is that the 'easy' songs ("Oblivion" and "Divinations") are right at the front of the album, which means getting into the other five songs CAN be a bit tricky for some.

Seriously, this album lives up to every bit of the hype it's gotten, and is my favorite album of 2009 so far (Death Magic Doom by Candlemass is damn close, though.) If CERTAIN PEOPLE would get over their "LOL MALLCORE" obsession and just give this album a chance, they might find it to be surprisingly good.

Or not.

SHE's Orion. I'm in love with the entire album. It's like a much more sugar-happy version of Coloris. My favorite of his (yes, SHE's a he) so far.

Someone recently sent me a link to Fever Ray and I kind of dig em. Their self titled album is a very strange sounding type of electronic music I can't classify, but I do listen to it quite a bit. Every time I listen to the album I always feel like it's too short, then realize it's actually about 44 minutes or so long. I guess that's a good sign.

The last album I listened to was The Pretender by Jackson Browne.

I will explain.

We had to buy a vinyl record from the thrift store and redesign it for graphic design.

Mashup artist L.isle's The Quiet Kid & The Quest of The Quantum Conundrum. It's no Girl Talk, but it's good enough. After another listen I'll probably weed out the bad songs and keep the ones that don't completely butcher a song, like messing with the pitch beyond recognition, just so it fits a beat.

I just bought Yes!, the fourth studio album from Canadian artist K-OS. It's actually been out in Canada since last April, but it just got a U.S. release this past Tuesday. I love it. I was worried that it wouldn't have that same eclecticism that I've come to love from K-OS (since his last album was heavily criticized for it), but this album has even more it than his last two albums. So, yeah, it's great. I only wish it were longer...

I've been listening to a lot of new (to me) music. Right now I am enthralled with Bring me the Workhorse by My Brightest Diamond. I'd describe it like if Portishead traded in it's turn tables for a strings section, a drum kit and a guitar. The singer's voice is a bit strange but completely breathtaking, for me anyways. Don't bother listening to the remixes of any of their songs. Most of them suck compared to the originals.
