Question Which one of today’s young female artists has the brightest future?

What’s up, people? I want to conduct a little survey with everybody here. I need your honest opinions concerning women in popular music. I would like to hear your thoughts on what the future holds for several of today’s young female artists that have become successful during the anti- and post-Britney movements.

From 2001 to the present era, the music industry gave us the following female artists:

Hilary Duff
Avril Lavigne
Kelly Clarkson
Ashlee Simpson
Amy Lee
Shakira
Pink
Lindsay Lohan

With the whole boy-band/pop-princess genre now dead and gone, I was hoping if all of you could predict the longevity of these elite eight female artists in a world where the musical tastes of record buyers are always fickle and where popular trends are always changing.

So which one of today’s young female artists do you think has the brightest future? Which one of today’s young female artists will outlast the others? Which one of today’s young female artists will continue to make hit music and become insanely popular later down the road? Which one of today’s young female artists has the potential to become a legend like U2, Green Day (soon-to-be legends), Mariah Carey (soon-to-be a legend), or Madonna?

Of course, please explain why you think what you think. Thanks in advance!

Kelly Clarkson, without a doubt. (And NOT because Nem would most likely castrate me if I said anything else ) Out of all eight listed, she has the most talent IMO, and will likely have greater longevity than the rest. Lindsay, Hilary, and Ashlee all blow, plain and simple, but will still stick around for quite a few years. Avril seems to be rising up from the 'joke' that she created for herself in 2001, Pink is meh, Amy Lee probably won't be quite as 'big' as the others, simply due to the fact that goth-rock doesn't seem to quite have the appeal of pop-rock, and Shakira is well...really smegging hot. Then again, I personally don't really like ANY of them (MAYBE excluding Kelly), so I merely judged them based on their talents as an artist and not on how much I liked/disliked them.

Kelly >> Amy >> Shakira >> Pink >> Avril >> Hilary >> Lindsay >> Ashlee

Here are my own two cents-

Hilary and Lindsay are actresses- first and foremost. Lindsay’s music has never gone anywhere- so we could easily rule her out as a durable force in music. Hilary has catered to mostly pubescent girls- so her music success is definitely over. Pink hasn’t had strong record sales since 2002, and her new record has sunk fast on the charts- so her career is hanging by a thread. Shakira is more popular outside the US- so her career is safe in that respect, but she’ll never become immensely popular. And Ashlee has been nothing but a joke, and I foresee her going down the same path as Britney- getting married to some loser and making babies all the time.

I like Amy Lee. I won’t mention her band Evanescence, since she gets most of the spotlight. Amy has a really great voice, and her music is better than most of the nu-metal crap out there. However, nu-metal will probably fade away in a matter of years- just like emo will do.

I’m really mixed on Kelly Clarkson. Yea- she has a very good voice. But her songs are obviously of the bubblegum variety, and she uses the same songwriters who wrote the Backstreet Boys’ music. Her songs have been played into the ground by Top 40 radio so much that I’m getting sick of her. I doubt she would’ve been this successful now if it weren’t for American Idol. If her success doesn’t last, I won’t be upset.

I think Avril Lavigne is the only artist out of all of them who has the best shot at making hit music years from now. She’s clearly better than what she was during her skater-chick days. Unlike her contemporaries, Avril is the only one who shows the most credibility. Her songs have greatly improved and become less bubblegum since getting rid of the ‘slick pop production’ that was all over Let Go. Moreover, she’s managed to increase her audience to include both young and old listeners, and she has earned the respect of many critics and fans alike. In the end, I bet Avril will blow Kelly, Ashlee and the rest of them out of the water.

BTW, Mad About MAD = Jericho = Me!

Young???? Some of these girls are getting kinda old to be the young stars. I'm not checking age but Amy Lee, Shakira and P!nk aren't younguns.
They are all talented and will most likely be successful for at least a few more albums but I'm saying they don't count haha.

Anyways, I think I'm voting for Kelly Clarkson because she definitely has the best voice out of them. She also has the best vocal control out of everyone in the list.

I think Hilary and Ashlee are the only two that will fizzle out. I doubt people will take them seriously in a few years...

Even though Lindsay is a crazy one, she could be great if she would calm down and focus more on her work.
And Avril will become the next Alanis Morisette soon, give it time. She is developing as an artist and her and Kelly Clarkson seem to have the most promise.

Voted for Kelly, although I'm sorta pissed that Cristina Scabbia isn't on here, but I digress. Kelly seems to be the only one in the group that has any real singing ability (although the music she chooses to make isn't great).

Hilary Duff - I don't know a single person in my age group or older that claims to listen to Hilary Duff. She's one of those Disney forced pop singers that nobody but children listen to. Definitely not going anywhere.

Avril Lavigne - I don't even know if she's interested in doing music anymore, but people seemed to have moved away from the whole "punk rawk" fad, so if she makes any sort of comeback its going to be some sort of sensitive, acoustic song.

Ashlee Simpson - Can't sing, not an ounce of talent in her, so she has all the makings of a pop star . I just don't see a big comeback.

Amy Lee - Everyone know's how I feel about Amy Lee. I know that she's going to enjoy a lot of success but I personally feel that she has a terrible, grating voice that gets on my nerves. I feel she's trying to fit into the female fronted rock/gothic scene with fashion rather than any sort of technical singing ability.

Shakira - I think Shakira is pretty talented and quite creative. I think she still has a few very popular albums left in her.

Pink - Eh, I have absolutely no opinion on her.

Lindsay Lohan - Another forced singer. She should probably stick to making disappointing movies and avoiding the paparazzi. I don't think anyone is interested in her music.

I voted Kelly Clarkson too, obviously. Agreeing with Nemesis, Cag, and TJ, I'd say she definitely has the best voice out of the list.

Hilary Duff - She can't even sing that well. She should stick to acting, even though she's not great at that either.

Avril Lavigne - I used to hate her music, but it's not so bad these days. It gets stuck in my head from time to time, and I don't find myself that opposed to having it stuck there.

Ashlee Simpson - Yes, she is a joke. Keep her on broadway so I don't have to hear her ever again, kthx.

Amy Lee - I don't care for evanslkdjflskdjfscence. At all. That said, she CAN sing, and they do have a lot of fans so I'm sure they're/she's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Shakira - She gets on my nerves with the way she changes her voice like 5 times in every song. She'll stick around though, because other people like her

Pink - Seems to have fallen off the planet compared to how big she was a few years ago. I don't like her though. I see her getting sick of being the "rebel" and bowing out someday.

Lindsay Lohan - She's a much better actress than she is a singer. Go with your talents is all I'll say. That, and GET TO WORK ON TIME

Edit: oh and Mad about MAD, I don't agree that Kelly wouldn't have been as successful without American Idol. Her first CD wasn't a great seller and she wasn't THAT popular until her second CD came out. People were drawn to the songs, not the fact that she came from a television show. That's just my opinion though.

Thanks for replying, those of you that did reply and took this poll seriously.

Allow me to respond to each of your comments.

cartman2002:
I didn't know you could edit poll categories. But I would if I knew. If there were an "Other" option, then one would have to specify his/her artist of choice. And it would have to be a female artist of the rock/pop-rock vein- not Beyonce, Fergie, Rihanna, Nelly Furtado or anyone else that does R&B/hip-hop.

elscorcho:
Point taken. The thing is that Kelly hooked up with a bunch of record producers that did stuff for Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Ashlee Simpson. As a result, the songs on Kelly's Breakaway album became extremely poppy and commercially accessible. The only difference between Kelly and Hilary/Lindsay/Ashlee is that she can really sing. I don't like Kelly's music that much for the same reasons that Nem described. Her sound is way to poppy for my tastes. I personally prefer Avril because her music (at least on Under My Skin) has more rock qualities in it. And you don't need a wide vocal range in order to sing rock songs (ahem- Green Day- ahem).

~TJ~:
I used the word "young" because those girls are young compared to the likes of Madonna, Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani. Madonna is (of course) in her 40s, Mariah is near 40, and Gwen is 35-36. In contrast, Shakira is probably the oldest out of the above group- possibly almost in her 30s. Amy Lee and Pink are probably my age. Kelly, Ashlee and Avril are in their early 20s. Hilary and Lindsay are around 20.

NemesisDesign:
I don't know who Cristina Scabbia is. Sorry about that. And I'm doubly sorry for not including an "Other" option.

xCagnazzo:
My original email account that had my Jericho username attached to it is broken. So I had to create a new username using my alternate email account. Once my original email account is back up and running, I'll revert back to using my Jericho username.

BTW, sorry to be with you, but what do "smeg" and "smegging" mean anyway? Just wondering.

Apparently smeg comes from the show Red Dwarf and is just an all purpose swearword and is derived from the word smegma (which I don't really want to explain, consult wikipedia).

I don't blame you for not putting Cristina Scabbia on there, I was just breaking balls. I think its better not having an "other" option because then it forces us to choose between artists that a lot of us don't seem to particularly like.

I agree. If you can't pick, just skip to the next thread. Cartman was just looking for an opportunity to post something, as usual.

FYI Jericho, Cristina Scabbia is the lead singer of the Italian goth-rock band Lacuna Coil, and although not a lot of people have heard of them, they're pretty popular with a lot of the users here (namely Nem/Nik/Kurt). Just thought I'd clear things up.

I just thought of something- just a thought.

What if Avril Lavigne gets to be as big as, say, Green Day? What if Avril gets to be so big that she begins doing stadium-sized concerts?
What if Avril starts sweeping Juno and Grammy Awards? What if Avril becomes a music legend like U2?

How would you guys feel if that were to happen?

If it were to happen in say, 2003, then I would have lost all hope in humanity and would have proceeded to drown myself in my bathtub. I could see it now...everyone would begin to act like she did, and therefore everyone would try to act all 'punk' which would cause the 'real' punk bands/followers to all commit mass suicide. The whole punk rock scene would then become a total joke to most, which would mean the few punk bands around would be forced to mass exodus to Mars, where with the help of President Bush (ironically enough), they would successfully terraform the planet, living in peace for the next few years. In around 2008 or so, however, the US Government would begin to realize that Avril is becoming quite the nuisance, so much so in fact, that she's now the #2 most wanted person in the world, behind Osama Bin Laden, who is still hiding somewhere in the Afghani mountains. After moving to Japan, disguising herself as the J-pop goddess "Naoko-chan", the CIA would find her, and after doing a huge show in Osaka, they would proceed to take her to custody. The Government, being as unhip as they are, would come under the suspicion that Avril was a punk, who as we all know fled to Mars about 6 years ago. They send her on a rocketship to Mars, and when the punks find out she has arrived on their planet (now renamed Underground Anarchy), their goverment, a group of emo girls known as "The Council of Broken Hearts, Slashed Wrists, and Bloody Poembooks", would sentence her to death by cutting. Not soon after, a group of bloodthirsty alien warlords would demand that the planet of Underground Anarchy surrender them their leader, or else they would destroy the entire solar system. TCBHSWBP would then choose to give the aliens Avril (who the girls tell them is their supreme overlord), causing the aliens to leave their planet alone. However, onboard their massive warship, the aliens are so annoyed by Avril's poser image, that one of the aliens decides to straight-up eat her. And with that, Avril would be no more...or so we would initially think. The alien who ate Avril, would then begin to behave like her. Of course, being that they don't take sh!t from anyone, they just decide to blast him to pieces with their ion plasma cannons. Of course, if Avril became big in around 2009 or so, then I just wouldn't care.

I need to lay off the ganja.

Damnit, cag, that's exactly what I was going to say.

Ok so if that doesn't happen, I wouldn't be all that surprised. Popular music seems to go through rapid phases between extreme poppiness and quasi-uniqueness. Think back to the late 90s when pop music was all about the boy bands and the girl singers who really can't sing. Then think back to a year or 2 ago when Green Day brought their used-to-be-punk-rock asses back from obscurity to unleash American Idiot on our poor country.

Pop music keeps floating between one mediocre style and another. That's why I think that if Avril times it right, if she reaches back into her wardrobe for one of her silly neckties and heads out the door to record some more pop punk at just the right moment, she'll find herself back on top in no time, if only for a short while.

Don't even get me started on U2

I voted for Avril Lavigne because she's the best out of all of them. HEHEHEH. But Kelly Clarkson will probably rule the world or something soon because like all the ****ing songs on her CD have been on the radio at least 10000 times in the last year.

I apologize for bringing up Avril Lavigne so much. It’s just that my roommate is a huge Avril fan, and his Avrilness is beginning to rub off on me.

IMO, I think both Avril and Kelly possess both the talent and smarts to have lasting careers. Both are respected by the general public. Neither are a Hilary Duff or any of these pop stars that the music industry loves to force upon teenyboppers whenever the ‘flavour of the moment’ changes. Kelly doesn’t try to be something she’s not, and Avril has long ditched her ‘skater chick’ persona. The way I see things, Kelly will have long career in the pop/Top 40 Radio genre, while Avril (along with Amy Lee, I guess) will have the same in the rock/Top 40 Radio genre.

U2 is probably the biggest, most popular band in the world right now, regardless of their ages. It’s mostly because they have a truly loyal fanbase, like SNL does. The only criticisms of U2 that I’ve heard of are how they’ve stopped being innovative with their music and stuck themselves in the middle of the road. But I can understand that kind of thinking. I’m not a big U2 mark, as Bono is a bit of a tool.

I still don’t understand the hatred directed towards Green Day. I’ve never really gotten into their music, and American Idiot is a grossly overrated album. But I don’t really understand what people mean by ‘what Green Day is now.’ When I listen to both AI and Dookie, I can’t find a difference in the way their music sounds.

Just my two cents, guys.

(BTW, I got my original email account working. So I’ll remain Jericho from now on. Sorry to be again. )

BTW, I’m familiar with Lacuna Coil. I just didn’t know the name of the female singer. My friend loves Lacuna Coil. But the only song I’ve heard from them is “Heaven’s A Lie,” which I think is an old song. My friend says Evanescence is just a poppy version of LC, which I believe is true.
