Hilary Duff

I don't know about you guys. But I find Hilary Duff's music to be a guilty pleasure for me. Her hits are just plain fun and quite catchy.

My favorite songs are "Come Clean," "Why Not" and "Wake Up" (her new song).

My main problem is that Hilary hardly performs live. And when she does on TV, she obviously lip-syncs. But I saw her perform on Today on NBC, and it didn't appear that she was pulling off an Ashlee Simpson. I've never seen her live in concert.

Sure, Hilary Duff's more-pop-than-"rock" vibe is pure bubblegum and is aimed at Disney Channel-watching kiddies. But at least this type of bubblegum tastes somewhat good.

What do you guys think?

All I can say is that I guess it pays for teenybopper singers to have top-notch production teams, songwriting teams, management teams, and publicity/promotion teams. Why else would people like Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson sell so many recrods?

Anyway, I'm pretty much tired of hearing about actresses trying to be singers and vice versa. Almost anything on CD will sound pleasing if heaps of studio production and audio engineering know-how are put in.

All it takes is much mass media to stimulate screaming teenage girls (and boys) into buying crud. Eh.

I don't know where I saw Hilary last but she has gotten really weird looking. Either her facial structure has changed a whole lot very recently or shes decided to stop eating like Lindsay Lohan (Skeletor).

On the topic of her music, I don't care for it. Theres nothing there, it seems about as generic as you can get. I haven't heard a ton of songs off that album but the ones I have heard have been rather cookie cutter. I guess the fact that I'm not much of a Pop music connoisseur may be hindering my ability to appreciate her music for what it is. At least I gave it a chance though.

I've never heard any of the songs on the album, but I've seen the cover at a store. The CD is called "Most Wanted" and if I remember correctly it has her face on a most wanted poster? I think that's right. Anyway that doesn't make much sense to me. When I think of Hilary Duff, a dangerous, wanted criminal is the furthest thing away from my mind.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that its a play on words. Perhaps it is more a statement of her popularity than suggesting that shes a badass/criminal.

And yes, I think it's kind of odd to have a greatest hits album after like what? 2 albums? And a few disney channel songs? It's.....different.

You also have to realize Matt, that people like Hilary and Lindsay aren't gonna be around in a few years so they have to get out as many albums as they can, including greatest hits packages, before they are no longer commercially and financially viable to the record companies.

Britney Spears is lasting longer than the public initially expected.
And the Backstreet Boys recently released a comeback album.
So there are a few teenyboppers acts that are still raking in $$$ for those fathead record executives.

Plus, hoardes of "pop-punk" bands will always have a widespread audience. Just look at how long Blink-182 lasted.

Trust me, the backstreet boys aren't coming back. That new album went nowhere. I saw 1 stupid video by them played a few times on mtv but thats it.

Oh and Britney's appeal is winding down, its very evident. She'll never be able to get her popularity back up to where it was. I guess she's going to attempt to though by having a kid and giving it a stupid name and parading it about to events. Good luck to her with that.

Avril Lavigne - She's probably done, or at least I hope she is. A lot of the reason why she got as far as she did was because of the controversy around her. By controversy I mean she attempted to be punk and that drove people in the punk community mad because she isn't.

Ashlee Simpson - Eh, I guess it looks like shes vamping up for a comeback. I don't really know if this is going to be terribly successful, because she doesn't really have a great singing voice and because her sister is sort of overshadowing her right now. If she does make a comeback, it won't last long.

Jessica Simpson - I don't care for her, but shes doing pretty well because of that 'movie' she was in. I think that when it comes down to pop stars, Jessica Simpson has a decent voice, but nothing special. I don't think shes going to fair just find in the years to come as far as musical success goes.

Kelly Clarkson - Well from my avatar you know I'm a fan. Kelly Clarkson is the only pop singer that I like, in fact shes pretty much the only artist I like that most people have ever heard of. Shes got a fantastic voice, and though I kind of object to how her lyrics are kind of dumbed down (breakup music sells here in America), shes got a bright future. I have high hopes for Kelly.

Pink - When is the last time you heard anything from pink. The last I heard about her she got really drunk and kicked her bodyguard's ass. I don't think she'll be coming back into the spotlight any time soon.

Christina Aguilera - She's done. Im one of the few people that don't like her voice at all. People have decided that she has a really soulful singing voice, but I think shes too big into vocalising (making noises while singing that aren't really words). Shes tried clean, shes tried 'dirrty', she should just cash in her chips and live out the rest of her life.

Good Charlotte - I suppose they will be successful in the future if they want to make a new album. There will always be a market for their music because there will always be teenage girls who want to piss off their parents by listening to 'punk rawk' but don't really want to listen to anything in the genre outside of pop-ish watered down GC or
Sum 41.

Simple Plan - LAAAAAAAAME emo. Eh, girls and pre-pubescent boys seem to love them though so they are going to be sticking around.

Sum 41 - See Good Charlotte.

The rest of them I don't know. They tend to just feed off nostalgic adults and teenagers that want to pay their respect to 'old school'. I can say that U2 bugs the crap out of me, for reasons I can't begin to explain.

I asked about those "older bands" because everyone over 25 here at my job are insanely crazy over Bruce Springsteen, DMB, and especially, U2. Many co-workers I know own every U2 album, enjoy their music, and go to their concerts.

Earlier this year, I went down to NYC and saw U2 live in concert at Madison Square Garden in order to be nice to my girlfriend. I kind of liked the whole thing, but it was really nothing great.

I think Avril Lavigne will become the next Alanis Morissette or Liz Phair when she hits her late 20s. By that age, no teenybopper will be interested in her anymore, and she'll be catering to her most devoted fans only. She'll be fitted in VH1 Territory by then. She won't be lighting up the Billboard charts anymore at that age. And she won't be popular with the TRL crowd anymore, unless she pulls of a Green Day or Mariah Carey and makes her future songs insanely poppy.

Kelly Clarkson, Pink, etc. probably all have the same fates, I think.

Point taken. But I'm just bewildered by how some artists in their 30s like Green Day, Mariah Carey (remember her meltdown in 2001?), and Gwen Stefani manage to stay popular with young people, while most 30-something-year-olds like Alanis Morissette and Janet Jackson get thrust into the aformentioned "VH1 Territory" after appealing to masses of listeners last decade.

It's either luck or a big dose of poppiness in the music that makes some seasoned artists more accessible to the teen demo than others.
