Heart Community

There's no thread for this, so I'm making one.

Also, this video from Derrick Comedy is HILARIOUS:

LOL. Derrick Comedy has always been great. I also just want to point out that Donald Glover's twitter username is "donglover". He's one of the best parts of that show and that's really saying something.

This is my new favorite show of the season. The chemistry is nice and Alison Brie is gorgeous.

My favorite episode so far was the Halloween episode, but all of the others have been good too.

I really hope Mystery Team is good, especially when you consider what happened when another sketch comedy troupe tried to make their own movie.

I LOVE Troy and Abed's little bits during the codas. Those two have great chemistry, and I can tell the writers are seeing that since they've given them more plots together during the actual show.

Yes. Yes, she is.

Oddly enough though, I defy you to find a photo of Alison Brie where she looks better than she does on the show.

kind of a long bump but we're halfway through the season. a few thoughts:

-Alison Brie is gorgeous.
-Best episodes this season have all been the ones there they let the groups split off on their own but tie all of the storylines together at the end (loved the Debate and Halloween episodes.) All of the worst episodes have seemed to be the ones where Jeff tried to hook up with somebody (read: Britta.)
-The STD episode was kind of bad too, didn't get much laughs out of it.
-"Somewhere Out There" was awesome. See episode 10.
-Alison Brie is really cute.
-Once they stopped trying to force Jeff and Britta together in plotlines, the show seemed to run much more smoothly. I think they're still working on the balance, but it's getting better.
-Favorite characters so far are Annie and Jeff. As much as I hate to admit it, Abed the character isn't as funny as everybody says, although the dude playing him is fantastic. Not really feeling Shirley so far, but even she has her moments (loved the Halloween episode where she targeted a professor.)
-They need to get John Oliver and John Michael Higgins to do more appearances on this show. Jack Black is also (reportedly) making a guest appearance in January. I'm so pumped.
-Did I mention Alison Brie is adorable?
-And that's a wrap. Overall, pretty good show and damn great for a first season. Can't wait until the next episode. And happy holidays.

They just had the other guys from Derrick Comedy on the episode. That's awesome.

But when did Jeff and Britta start dating? They just aired the episode out of order. Nice going, jackasses, no wonder you're in fourth place.

And Community has been renewed for a second season.

And, oh, yeah, those other shows, too.

Um, one of those other shows (the Office) is way better than Community. Plus, Community was going to come back anyway. If they were on any other network, not a chance, but on NBC, it was a guarantee. I am a little mad though that 30 Rock is coming back to continue to drain the milk out of the Office's tits like the wrong baby did to Pam's tits (seriously, was that like the creepiest joke in the history of scripted comedy? It was definitely for this show. Then again, they did have one character shoving a live can in a freezer, so maybe not).

Boy if you think 6 is 10 billion, I wonder what season you think the Simpsons are in right now? Also, are you honestly telling me that you think a show is good just based on what season they are on?

Please don't get me started on the Simpsons either. I'm not saying that a show's quality is determined by how long they are on. Consider that the original office had 2 seasons of like 6 episodes so 12 in total about a documentary film crew following a real office. The US version of the office has had 118 episodes. They have completely abandoned the whole documentary premise and turned it into the wacky adventures of Michael and crew.

The difference I was trying to point out was that Community still has fresh ideas and can still go in some interesting directions. The Office cannot. They indulged the audience with the Pam and Jim thing (which has turned both of the characters into the worst 2 on the show), they made Schrute and Michael into cartoon characters. It's a show that should have ended at least 2 seasons ago.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still check out The Office every once in a while and laugh at a sight gag, but I just find it laughable to say that it's "way better" than Community when its so obviously past its prime.

Everybody always brings up that documentary thing. I have a feeling that they have a reasoning for in that will be revealed before the show is done. There are many reasons that they can say where all of this is going. They can say it's being broadcasted in another country (ala Modern Family), or they are making a lot of episodes so they can be broadcasted in constant syndication, it could be broadcasted on a cable network that is not talked about a lot. There are a lot of reasons they can use.

Also, this is not just an Office related problem. You will see soon that anyone who uses the mockumentary format will always have this problem. I mean, Modern Family already committed some of these problems by having famous guest actors in their show. Why is Shelly Long playing the guys mother for instance? That doesn't make sense but that's just the nature of the mockumentary.

The fresh ideas wagon is not necessarily true. Remember, Heroes had a popular and good first season (by what I heard), but then in the second, I remember hearing so many people saying that the writing got bad. It doesn't matter how many fresh ideas there are, it matters how the writers write. And that's why the Office is still good, because they are still able to come up with funny things and take the show in different directions. Also, I still think Jim and Pam are great, and that with this baby now out, the story for them will get more interesting. Michael is also not as annoying as he use to be I find now, and as for Dwight, though I didn't like the angle he went down by trying to get Jim fired from the manager position, now that that is done, I think he's going to get more interesting, especially with the new love triangle that might develop between him, Angela, and Pam's sister.

I think in this case it's all in the matter of opinion. You may think this but a lot of people don't. Also, don't get me wrong either, I think Community is funny and refreshingly creative, especially for todays comedies, but I still think the Office is way better, and way funnier.

Question to ask. Community is re-running it's entire first season on NBC this summer, so should I get into watching it, or should I just forget it since it's probably going to be cancelled anyway going up against the Big Bang Theory?

Watch it so when the Big Bang Theory comes on, you can remember what it's like to laugh. It's kind of stupid to not watch a comedy because it's going to get cancelled. They usually don't have an important running plot so it's not like you'll be left with a bunch of unanswered questions. The funny just stops and you realize that the network that canceled the show is run by a bunch of shitheads. You get on the internet to complain and then you move on.

Community: Started off with a big bang (pun intended!), but the more I began to care about the characters, the further and further the writing slipped. I'm not necessarily enraged by this since it happens with most comedies, but it's disappointing nonetheless. I'd give the show either four stars or possibly a generous 4.5. Probably the best comedy in NBC's lineup at this particular moment in time, but quite clearly inferior to its new competition.

Alison Brie: Perfect eyes, but everything else about her is average, and I don't like her as a person. This shall not be my next Summer.

Valid if you don't have a heart, only partially valid if you do. I don't want to get invested in a group of characters that aren't going to last any more than I want to get invested in a story that isn't going to last.

Sadly, that appears to be exactly what I've just done.

Really? You're emotionally invested in the Community characters? As much as I enjoy the show, there is no plot arc of any importance. That just comes across as overly dramatic to me. It is never good when a decent show gets taken off but comedies are *always* easier to get in/out of than dramas.

In fact, I would even argue that good dramas shouldn't be avoided even if you know that they've been canceled. Deadwood got canceled prematurely, leaving many unanswered questions but I'd kick mysel for not watching it.

To some small degree, and that's enough to keep me going. If I can't get into the characters, I can't get into the show. My comment, though, was intended to be taken far more broadly than it was. I was speaking of sitcoms in general and not just Community.

Absolutely. I'm far more likely to take a risk on a sitcom than a drama (case in point: this one), but if the goal is to become deeply invested (as it is for me, at least) and the possibility of doing so exists, it remains a risk all the same.

Depends just how infuriating the conclusion of said drama is, and without researching under what circumstances any given series ended and almost certainly spoiling yourself in the process, it's tough to know which are worth your while. Legend of the Seeker, for example? Completely and totally worth it. Veronica Mars? Fuck that.

This is partly one of the reasons I've never gotten into Mad Men. I tried watching an episode here and there and I just haven't been able to recieve it because I don't get it. I could watch the show from the beginning, but that is a lot of time to invest into a show that I may not even like in the end.

As for Community, I didn't watch it because I was working that night, but I am interested in checking it out

How was Betty White in it. I've kind of been getting sick of her since she seems to appear in everything these days.

It's weird how Drew Carey is constantly losing weight and gaining it back again.
