Default American Idol 8

Thoughts?

I want to start with one thing: KARA FUCKING DIOGUARDI IS AMAZING!

Some other things:

Paula with square glasses: Good
Paula with geeky-ass clown glasses: Baaaaaaad

There are a lot of people that auditioned who were signed:
Joanna Paciti (A&M records-- Kara called her out on that one. Thank god.)
Brent Keith something (that creep who auditioned in Louisville with the, as Joel McHale would put it, CREEPY FLESH-COLORED BEARD. He was on Nashville Star and had videos on CMT)
just to name a few.... and they all got through by the way.

A LOT of sappy stories about the families. After nearly an hour of them in the premiere alone, I almost puked.

Bikini Girl: ew. Bikini girl and Ryan kissing: ewie. "I Kissed A Girl" playing in the background while they kissed: priceless.

Feel good songs play after every audition! And they have no relevance to the auditioners whatsoever....

Lets just hope it gets better when they are in Hollywood.

I can't believe this show is still on. I've never seen an episode, but damn, people go nuts for this show... it's a mystery to me.

I actually started watching American Idol again this year for the first time since the Taylor Hicks season. This seaosn's looking alright. Kara's a pretty good judge and Paula seems a little bit less nutty this year.

FOX probably plans on keeping this show on for the next 20 years knowing them.

I really like Adam Lambert.

He's really hot. And he can sing.

Per blacks request I guess I'll mention something on here. It's a bit of old news, but no one has said anything about it on here so...

What do people think about Canadian Idol being postponed for one season? I think it's great, because A. None of the people who have come off that show have done anything worthwild in the music industry, and 2. I shouldn't have to look at the off-spring of one of Canada's worst Prime Ministers ever. Ben Mulroney that no talent bum!

I don't really watch American Idol so I can't talk about the show but this was the one piece of information I knew about the Idol enterprise.

Some brief initial thoughts on the Top 13:
  • Adam Lambert: Kelly Clarkson meets Taylor Hicks. He's entertaining, his range is off the charts, and if he doesn't win, I'll be sure to eat MADfan's shoe. Were someone to take his singing and performance skills and fuse them with Megan's looks and personality (and genitalia), we'd have the ultimate Idol contestant! Uh, next to Kelly, of course.
  • Alexis Grace: The judges gave her far more credit than she deserved in Group 1 week, so I'm a bit cold to her at this point. We'll see what the coming weeks bring, I guess.
  • Allison Iraheta: I'm not so sure this girl is Top 13 material -- if "Alone" wasn't such a gimme, she'd probably be back home updating her MySpace right about now -- but I have nothing against her at this time. It'll be interesting to see how she fares with less recognizable songs.
  • Anoop Desai: He won't last long, but I like Anoop. Thumbs up!
  • Danny Gokey: Top 3 material. If anyone has what it takes to topple Lambert, it's him. That said, I don't believe anyone has what it takes to topple Lambert.
  • Jasmine Murray: Really? SHE gets a wildcard slot, and meanwhile, Felicia and Ann Marie weren't even considered!? HULK SMASH!
  • Jorge Nunez: Well, I *did* like Jorge at one point, but then his tears cost Felicia her Top 13 slot. Poor, poor Felicia...
  • Kris Allen: I don't understand this one at all -- Kris isn't much of a singer, he's not someone I can picture the ladies going particularly wild over, and he has all the personality of a Jason Castro-brand doorstop. What's to like? Megan should've taken his slot, and then we'd have an even Top 12 as "God" intended.
  • Lil Rounds: What season of American Idol would be complete without the token sassy black woman/gospel singer/surprise elimination victim? Same shit, different year. Brilliant vocalist, but about as appealing to me as watching paint dry at Al Gore's manor. [Yeah, I've used that one before, but so has Idol, so it only seemed fair.]
  • Matt Giraud: This dude, apparently, commands a massive fanbase for reasons that aren't yet clear to me. He'd better make his mark tomorrow night, or I have a feeling he'll be dead to me from here on out.
  • Megan Joy: Not quite as breathtaking as Kristy and not quite as cute as Kellie, but close enough for comfort. Love her! If only she had the pipes of a Kelly or a Kat. Or even the pipes of a Kristy or a Kellie, for that matter.
  • Michael Sarver: Talentless hack. He'll be gone on Wednesday. Poor, poor Ann Marie...
  • Scott MacIntyre: Note to self: Cut out vocal cords, begin singing, audition for American Idol 9, sound like a cat getting raped, and outlast hundreds of thousands of more deserving contestants based solely on my inspirational story. I mean, don't get me wrong -- Scott is far from a talentless hack, but the judges shouldn't be lighting up cigarettes after each of his performances either. This isn't Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, folks -- give this man the credit he deserves and move on.
As for the Canadian Idol discussion, I appreciate your efforts, tvman, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who watches that garbage around here.

Sing it, sister! Down with Scott and off with Carly's top!

Well, she hit on something the judges like, so I guess you can't blame her for milking it for all it's worth. Still not a huge fan, but I'll gladly take this hot little tart schtick over what most of the others have to offer.

Quote:
Allison Iraheta: [...] It'll be interesting to see how she fares with less recognizable songs.
As it turns out, she fared quite well. I'm sold!

Quote:
Kris Allen: I don't understand this one at all -- Kris isn't much of a singer, he's not someone I can picture the ladies going particularly wild over, and he has all the personality of a Jason Castro-brand doorstop.
Okay, I didn't realize women had such low standards these days. Perhaps it's time I left the ol' basement!

Quote:
Matt Giraud: [...] He'd better make his mark tomorrow night, or I have a feeling he'll be dead to me from here on out.
Not bad. He's not dead to me yet.

Quote:
Megan Joy: Not quite as breathtaking as Kristy and not quite as cute as Kellie...
I think I may have jumped the gun on this one, possibly on both counts. Between the smile, the attitude, the hair, the dancing (), the red dress (), the song choice (), and those delightful robin squawks at the end (), Megan's on the fast track to becoming my favorite contestant of all-time! Uh, next to Kelly, of course. Give this girl at *least* a few more weeks, America!

Quote:
Scott MacIntyre: [...] This isn't Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, folks -- give this man the credit he deserves and move on.
Much better. Thanks.

So, Lambert killed it tonight, as did Danny and Allison to a lesser degree, as did Megan in her own special little way. Sarver, defying all odds, will probably make it through this week after all on his masterful song choice; Jorge, Jasmine, and Anoop, on the other hand, are in deep, deep doo-doo. Here's hoping Anoop lives to sing another week!

Here's how I'd like this season to go down: Lambert > Megan > Danny > Allison > Alexis > Lil > Anoop > Matt > Jorge > Jasmine > Scott > Kris > Sarver.

Here's how I *expect* it to go down: Lambert > Danny > Scott > Lil > Matt > Allison > Kris > Alexis > Megan > Anoop > Sarver > Jorge > Jasmine.

And, until I know I'm not just talking to myself here, I think I'll leave it at that. I look forward to hearing from the rest of our Idol discussion regulars shortly -- particularly he of little taste.

Ah, American Idol. This is the first time I've been floowing AI since the Taylor Hicks (still can't stand him) season. Although I do have my favorites (David Archeluta, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and there's others I dont remember) The addition of Kara has been a worthwhile avenue. She has a good personality and it helps balance the attention away form the nuttiness of Paula. Anyway, my thoughts on the top 13. I don't remember everybody that well yet and I usually don't get an absolute favorite till around the top 7 or 6. However, there ones I dont like that much so far. Like Megan and Adam- there's just something about their singing I dislike- not sure what it is yet. Tonights results will be interesting as will wahtever this "twist" Simon was talking about will be. Well that's all for now folks,

oh and about Canadian Idol, yeah it's sad to see it not on this year but at least I won't have to look at Ben Mulroney. (wait did somebody already make a similar joke, oh well) Still don't know why the son of Canada's least favorite Prime Minister's is so obsessed with.

Oh, just because I have a now-useless placard that reads, "Normund and Tatiana FTW"....Cynics, all of you!

My opines (for now, anyway):
  • Two-hour shows + addition of a fourth judge + the fact that Paula wasn't fired to make room for the fourth judge = the ultimate in tedium.
  • Fortunately, the eccentricity of this year's talent is on a par with last year's, thereby somewhat negating the lasting effects of the aforesaid tedium. Somewhat.
  • Adam and Danny will be in the top two, partly because they will deserve to be there and partly because the payola-influenced judges will likely pull another Archuleta by shoving them in our faces all season. If this scenario occurs (and it will), then I'll definitely be in Adam's corner, even if the aforesaid scenario requires me to agree with Matt in the process.
  • The inevitable "soul sista" curse, which we can predict as readily as the appearance of an overly effeminate male reporter on a red carpet, will descend upon Lil. Nevertheless, I will root for earnestly, all the while knowing her fate. I will be inconsolable for weeks thereafter, and no one will be allowed to talk to me until I break my hermetic silence.
  • I want to do Alexis.
  • Although I like Scott right now, I wonder how far he can carry the whole "inspirational song" thing before he reaches Archuleta-like proportions of unbearableness. Then again, since Adam and Danny seem to be the pimps of choice this season, I have a feeling that won't happen.
  • I liked Megan a lot until last night. I couldn't even bring myself to throw a few sympathy votes her way. I'd mention whom Megan sorta reminds me of; but then a certain forum member, whose name appears in red letters, would have me fitted for concrete shoes near the Atlantic.
  • No, seriously, I really want to do Alexis. Really, really badly. Really.
  • Since Allison is this season's biker chick, I will naturally have to root for her too. Still, after seeing her performance of Heart's "Alone" a few weeks ago, I couldn't help lamenting the early exit of that pink-haired girl who initially auditioned with Heart's "Barracuda" and was an early fave of mine to contend for this year's title. Hollywood week can bite me hard (especially since I won't feel anything).
  • Michael Sarver: yet another feel-good, blue-collar, po'-boy story wasted on a mediocre singer. Sure to work my last nerve if he sticks around for the middle stages of the finals. And he will achieve both -- count on it. I can predict it as readily as the appearance of an overly effeminate....Never mind.
  • I don't really give two dry shits about anyone else in the finals, at least not enough to opine at any real length.
  • Oh, and I still want to do Alexis. Seriously, I want her to ride me like a rodeo bull. How can we make this happen? (*Cue the inevitable joke that begins, "Mizz, all the Viagra and Cialis in the world...."*)

Wow, color me shocked and awed -- it appears we once again have few major points of contention this season. Just so we're clear, though, I *will* fight you to the death on Megan if you don't revert your tune in short order. To the DEATH!

Because I get the feeling Kara's being groomed to replace Paula next season (or, worst case scenario, the one after), I can live with an extra judge for the time being. Suddenly eject Paula in favor of someone we don't know, and the fans would've surely been up in arms; bring Kara in, give her a season or two to grow on us, and *then* kick Paula to the curb? That won't sting nearly as much. Besides, she's insightful (which is more than can be said for Randy and Paula), it's nice to have a little eye candy at the judges' table for the first time in the show's history, and as the writer of several Kelly songs, I have great respect for her. Long live Ms. DioGuardi's Idol career!

Quote:

It took me a minute or two to figure this one out, probably because, frankly, that's a bit of a stretch. I'm willing to accept a Pickler comparison (even though Megan is ten times better looking, half as brainless at worst, and infinitely more appealing stylistically), but she-who-shall-not-be-named-in-the-same-breath-as-anyone-with-even-the-faintest-hint-of-talent? Nuh-uh. No way, no how. Both are blonde, both are lovable; beyond that, I see no further parallels. Quirky-cute vs. sugar-sweet -- two *completely* different personality types! No, I simply won't hear of it, sir.

Boy, I wish I hadn't just pictured that.

She has a daughter, so, probably not. In fact, you'll probably see the daughter about 55 minutes into tonight's episode when she gets eliminated, so prepare to have your hopes and dreams crushed right alongside hers!

CAWlled it. That's three for three so far -- six for six if I'm counting each of my bottom three predictions -- which, I think we can all agree, makes me the indisputable winner of this thread. Even if no one else appears to be playing.

Sing it with me, everyone!

I fell into a burning ring of brilliant predictions that might lead some to claim I'm "on fire",
I went down, down, down, and the flaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaames went hiiiiIIIIIIIIIIIII--*glass shatters on all seven continents*--IIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiigher...
