Yeah, just about everything from Tom Petty is good.
Def Leppard was popular back then (Love Bites, etc.)
Cheap Trick--The Flame
The Cars (had lots of good ones...my favorites are Just What I Needed and Good Times Roll)
I think Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" is from the 80's (although, I first heard it in a Millennium episode...liked it ever since)
Damn, I can't think of anything else right now. Rent some 80's movies. I know The Wedding Singer had tons of them. Get The Breakfast Club, etc. Or, even better, search Amazon for some soundtracks of 80's movies. That should definitely help you.

Security Guard: All right son, we're gonna need those two hams back.
Chris: Huh? I don't have any hams.
Guard: Lift up your shirt, son.
Chris: I need an adult! I need an adult!
Guard: You're not a shoplifter, you're just a fat kid. Sorry about that fatty fat fatty. Hey Tom, he's just a fat kid! Aren't you, fatty? You're just a big ol' fat kid. Here's some chocolate, fatso.
Chris: Thanks!

Lois: Oh, honey, no one thinks you're fat.
Lifeguard: I'm sorry ma'am, you can't park your van on the diving board.
Lois: This is my son!
Lifeguard: Oh. My apologies. Hey Tom! He's not a van, he's just a fat kid!
