Biography:
Pederson, Ron, born in Edmonton Alberta in 1978. He joined the vibrant Edmonton theatre scene at the age of eight. Ron studied acting at the Citadel Theatre School from 1987 until 1991, when he was invited to join the theatre troupe, Teatro la Quindicina by playwright Stewart Lemoine , the beginning of a strong artistic relationship. Throughout the nineties Ron worked with every major theatre company in Edmonton and extensively on the new works of Stewart Lemoine.

Ron's range as an actor/singer led to many different projects, from large scale musicals to small experimental works, from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods to Romeo and Juliet (playing Romeo). He has worked with directors Robin Phillips , Duncan MacIntosh, Ron Jenkins, David Storch and Bob Baker . He has also worked at the Vancouver Playhouse in 1999.

Ron has been nominated for six Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards, two for best supporting actor (Deux Durang in 1998 [Dir. Marianne Copithorne ], The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 2002); two for best actor (Burt in 1994, Little Shop of Horrors in 2000); for outstanding performance for young audiences (Dunk! in 1996); and for outstanding musical score for his compositional work on Chris Craddock's play The Critic in 2000. He was awarded the Sterling for his performance in the Citadel Theatre's production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

In 1995 he joined the cast of the Legendary Live Completely Improvised Soap Opera Die-Nasty with whom he performed every Monday night at the Varscona Theatre in Edmonton for eight years. It was with "Die-Nasty" that Ron honed his improv skills with a crack team of local actors and guest stars such as Mark McKinney, Mike Myers and Joe Flaherty. Flaherty invited Ron to participate in the Los Angeles improvised soap opera The Soap Also Rises in 2002, where he performed with comedians Fred Willard, Katharine O'Hara and Martin Short. From 2002 to 2005 he joined the cast of Madtv and became a favorite regular on the program, again showcasing his versatility. In 2005 Ron was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for his work on Madtv's tenth season. He has also written and performed original sketches on CBS's Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Ron has kept his theatrical roots by returning to Edmonton regularly to perform with Teatro la Quindicina in the plays of Stewart Lemoine, included a remount of Shockers Delight! in 2004, and A Grand Time in the Rapids in 2005. In the summer of 2007 he played two cameo roles in productions of The Winter's Tale and the musical version of Two Gentlemen of Verona by the Free Will Players at the River City Shakespeare Festival. Also in 2007 he starred in the Canadian Stage's production of Little Shop Of Horrors.

Pederson is a cast member of the late-night sketch comedy show "MADtv," which is now in it's ninth season. An online petition encouraged producers to make him a permanent full-time cast member.

The Unexpected
MADtv producers discovered Pederson at Second City in Los Angeles. However, he says, "I would never have come to Hollywood with a head shot and a resume and pounded the pavement and tried to get an agent. I would've imagined myself at Stratford holding a sphere."

Spinning Around
"Suddenly it was this whirlwind that just came out of nowhere. I was prepared to go back and do Shakespeare in the park in Edmonton, which I would've absolutely been happy to do," he says. "The gear shifted so swiftly that it kinda made my head spin."

Day by Day
"The best thing I can do is to just be present where I am now and not think of all the distractions," says Pederson.

Ron's such a cutie. It's really fun to watch him on MAD tV.

He really lucked out with MAD tV producers spotting him.

THE GREAT CANADIAN MALE

RON PEDERSON – The Funnyman

Text: BRUCE WEIR

One September day eight years ago, Ron Pederson grabbed a jacket, a flashlight and his old retainer and headed out the door. With those props he created an unforgettably funny security guard character for the improv comedy marathon held annually by Edmonton’s Die-Nasty troupe. Booked for a two-hour stint onstage, he hit the wall 32 hours later. A comedian was born.

He wound up joining the Die-Nasty cast (which stages a weekly improvised soap opera of the same name), gaining a reputation for playing maladroit characters with names like Bumbleberry Stick and the Dink. Pederson became a familiar local stage presence, appearing in everything from musicals to the Gothic adventures and offbeat romances of cult playwright Stewart Lemoine.

His theatrical background has allowed Pederson, now 26 and a cast member on the Fox series MADtv , to create detailed characters that reflect comedic influences as varied as SCTV , Jack Lemmon, Neil Simon and Gene Wilder. "My favourite type of comedy is when it just comes out naturally," he says.

At Die-Nasty, Pederson met Joe Flaherty, and in the summer of 2002, he accepted the SCTV veteran’s invitation to appear in an improvised soap opera in Los Angeles. One night, Martin Short appeared as a surprise guest. "I had a killer, killer show, and afterwards Martin Short kind of shook me and said, ‘You’re hilarious! Let’s go drink,’ and he bought me a Rusty Nail," Pederson recalls.

With that cocktail, Pederson hopped onto the Underground Railroad of Canadian comedy: Flaherty introduced him to Short, Short called MADtv executive producer Dick Blasucci, and two days later, Pederson was at the biggest audition of his life.

MADtv viewers have already seen Pederson’s dead-on impersonation of Woody Allen as well as his take on Saddam Hussein. One season in, he’s just starting to hit his stride. "It takes me a little while to put the lampshade on my head and be silly around people," he says. Sounding a bit like Flaherty’s SCTV -era Count Floyd character, Pederson admits, "Acting is scary; comedy is frightening." [ ]

If Ron returns next year, will we finally see his security Guard Character? I read somewhere about 5 months ago (I think Mad Dog posted it) that he was working on bringing his character to MAD... what ever happened to that? I wanna see it.
